UK Outlook for Monday 17 Dec 2007 to Wednesday 26 Dec 2007:

The far northwest is likely to be cloudy and breezy with outbreaks of rain at times for much of the outlook period, although temperatures should be around normal. Elsewhere conditions are likely to be largely dry with light winds, variable cloud amounts for most of next week, along with some fog and freezing fog patches. The thickest cloud may bring some light drizzle or perhaps some light snow flurries, although amounts will be small. It will be rather cold, perhaps cold in the southeast, with some overnight frosts. Late next week more unsettled, but less cold, conditions are likely to spread eastwards, perhaps bringing a little snow initially. Then outbreaks of rain along with some stronger winds are expected, and these conditions should persist into the following week.

UK Outlook for Saturday 22 Dec 2007 to Monday 31 Dec 2007:

A weakening band of rain (with hill snow in the north) will cross most parts on Saturday, though very little rain is expected in the south. Thereafter, high pressure builds once again bringing a brief return to the settled and quiet weather with some sunshine by day and frost by night. By Christmas day, milder, breezier and wetter weather is likely to have spread across most parts, perhaps preceded by some sleet or snow but only on the highest ground in the north. The rest of the period then looks set to be fairly changeable with rain and strong winds at times, particularly in the north. Temperatures will return to near-normal after a chilly start.

UK Outlook for Sunday 23 Dec 2007 to Tuesday 1 Jan 2008:

Sunday should be reasonably dry and bright for most, with high pressure dominating the weather. A change is on the way though and by Christmas day, less-cold, breezier and wetter weather is likely to have spread across most parts, perhaps preceded by some sleet or snow but only on the highest ground in the north. The rest of the period then looks set to be fairly changeable with rain and strong winds at times, particularly in the north where there could be snow on the mountains at times. The best of the drier spells will be in the south and east of the country. Temperatures will return to near-normal after a chilly start, with fewer frosts expected.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 25 Dec 2007 to Thursday 3 Jan 2008:

A mild but rather breezy westerly type will dominate, especially across Scotland and Northern Ireland, where there may be gales on some days, whilst southern areas see some settled interludes with lighter winds. This at times rather changeable weather will continue through much of the period, particularly in the north, where rain could turn to sleet or snow over the mountains at times, but with sunshine and showers in-between systems. The best of the drier, sunnier spells will be in the south and east of the United Kingdom, although there will be some rain in these parts too, notably early in the period. Temperatures will be mostly near normal, with frosts possible in all areas, but with the main frost risk occuring between passing weather systems.

A rather breezy westerly weather type will dominate this period, with some strong winds and perhaps gales at times across Scotland and Northern Ireland. Rather changeable weather is expected with some showers and spells of rain across all parts, but particularly in the north, where rain could be heavy at times and may turn to sleet or snow over the mountains. Overnight frost and fog patches are likely to form during any more settled spells when winds are lighter, but daytime temperatures will be mostly near or just above normal.

UK Outlook for Sunday 30 Dec 2007 to Tuesday 8 Jan 2008:

This period could start with high pressure dominating the weather in the south and east bringing a couple of dry days here with some sunshine by day but also some frosts by night. Some rain, as usual, is likely in the northwest. During the rest of the period this high pressure is expected to generally slip away to the east, to lie over the near continent which will allow southerly winds to dominate the weather. There are indications that eastern parts especially, may stay mostly dry with frost and fog by night, which may be slow to clear in the daytimes. Further west though there is likely to be more in the way of a breeze at times, along with the threat of some rain, particularly in the northwest.

Met Office hinting at colder conditions for eastern areas:

UK Outlook for Monday 31 Dec 2007 to Wednesday 9 Jan 2008:

A slow moving band of rain is expected to affect many parts on Monday. High pressure will be building though, so by Tuesday, many places should be drier. During the rest of the period this high pressure is expected to lie over the near continent which will allow southerly winds to dominate. There are indications that eastern parts will be rather cold with frost and fog by night, which may be slow to clear in the daytimes and also the threat of wintry showers. Further west there is likely to be more in the way of a breeze, along with the threat of some rain, particularly in the northwest, though it should be milder here. These unsettled conditions could edge across the whole country towards the end of the period.

Despite the fact that I have very little faith in these wildly oscillating forecasts, I'll quote the UKMO's further outlook from today just to throw petrol on the fire!

lol Stuart - I think with the excitement of a high pressure system building in 4 days time some 500-1000 miles to the east of us, that probably will have no effect whatsoever on the weather we experience in the UK, people are keen to pick up on any mention of the possibility of a brisk southeasterly wind that might make it chilly in Cleethorpes for a couple of hours next Monday!

UK Outlook for Tuesday 1 Jan 2008 to Thursday 10 Jan 2008:

High pressure over the continent will be the dominating factor for much of this period. This will allow southerly winds to dominate, giving many eastern areas a relatively dry and settled spell. These areas will become rather cold with frost and fog by night, which may be slow to clear during the day times. Further west it is likely to be milder with more in the way of a breeze, along with the threat of cloud and outbreaks of rain. However, any eastwards progress will be rather slow and painful at times, but if this happens it brings with it the risk of some sleet or snow in the east. The far northwest may see unsettled, mild and windy conditions arrive towards the end of the period.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 2 Jan 2008 to Friday 11 Jan 2008:

High pressure over the continent will be the dominating factor, then a gradual breakdown is expected from the northwest in the final week. South to southeasterly winds will be noteworthy, leading to some relatively dry and settled spells in the east. These areas will become rather cold and frosty by night, but perhaps with fog at times too. Further west it will often be milder and windier, the Atlantic fronts bringing with them the threat of thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain at times. As they edge eastwards this leads to the added risk of some sleet or snow inland through some central parts. The far northwest will become more unsettled and windy later, this milder type probably extending southeastwards.

I think anyone expecting the Meto to call it widespread cold and snowy now is expecting to much.

If the model data continue to remain the same/improve I would expect Advanced Weather Warnings on Sunday or Monday, with Severe Weather Warnings coming out on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as details and specifics become forecastable.

This can still go wrong, and the Meto will sit on the fence over the weekend.

I think you're right ms - the volatility of all the models at the moment is such that an extended forecast of any kind at this stage is foolish. It's definitely a case of generalities and from that producing a 'best guess'.

UK Outlook for Thursday 3 Jan 2008 to Saturday 12 Jan 2008:

Cold air is likely to bring sleet and snow over eastern parts on Thursday and Friday, whilst to the west it should be less cold with more sunny spells around. More unsettled conditions are expected to spread across from the west during next weekend. This is likely to mean some snow initially, and then a spell of rain and more breezy conditions across all parts as cold conditions are replaced by milder air. It should then turn more showery, with sunny spells and blustery showers blowing in from the west. Temperatures are likely to return to around normal, but there will still be some snow on hills. The strongest winds are likely over northwest Scotland with gales, perhaps severe gales, there at times.
