September 2007 Report.

By Paul Carfoot.

Apart from a little light rain recorded on the 2nd the first two weeks in to September were dominated by high pressure and it was dry with a good deal of sunshine here, with daytime temperatures mostly slightly above average, although some clear nights gave low minimums for early September, -0.5c on the 4th with a touch of ground frost, the first of the season.

The 16th saw a change as low pressure took control to the north of the UK. Rain arrived here late on the 16th producing just a trace, but more rain in the form of showers produced 2mm on the 17th.

It also became noticeably cooler as winds swung from the SW to NW.

With a clear sky on the night of the 18th the minimum temperature fell to 2.0c here with another ground frost.

By the 19th the daytime temperatures had recovered to average, but with cloudy nights and now SW winds the minimums were well above average, with a notably mild night on the 20th, minimum only 14.7c. The unsettled conditions continued with more significant rain being recorded here on the 21st with 8mm over just 1 and half hours.

More wet days followed and a remarkably mild night on the 24th, with a temperature of 16c around 4am, but a cold front pushed through shortly afterwards and the temperature fell 5c in 5 hours to 11c by 09:14, so the overnight minimum not reflecting the warmth of the previous hours.

The period from the 25th to the end of the month was rather unsettled with a little rain at times and also on the cool side as winds turned more northerly and later north easterly.

Summary.

A dry, warm and sunny start for the first half the month with only 1mm of rain being recorded here during the first 16 days. The second half was more unsettled with a little rain and saw a gradual cool down with some chilly nights and a couple of ground frosts. The mean temperature came in slightly above average at 14.1c + 0.4c above the CET average. Rainfall total 27mm.

The stats below are for September 2007 from Westbury, Wiltshire.

This is the coolest September that I have recorded (first was 2003), most likely due to the cool down in the final week. It was 2.02c cooler than last September. Conversely it was the driest September recorded, with just 35.5mm of rain (30mm of which fell on the 24th/25th!).

Average max = 19.70c (highest = 25c on 7th & 13th)

Average min = 9.63c (lowest = 4c on 18th & 27th)

Mean = 14.66c

Dry days = 16

Rain days = 14 (a number with drizzle or just the odd light shower)

Rainfall = 35.5mm

A month of two halves, the first was warm, dry and and sunny. The second was cold, wet and windy. The first 15 days saw no measurable rain whatsoever. The temperature averaged 16.6°C, some 2°C above average for the time of year. Strangely though, there were no excessively warm days, with 23.6°C being the highest on the 7th - the lowest September high maxima since 2002.

The 16th then heralded a change to much cooler conditions as winds switched to the north. The 17th and 18th were rather cold days, reaching 13.6°C and 13.9°C, with minima being well into single figures. The morning of the 18th saw the coldest reading of the month at 5.9°C. It then turned milder for a time, but it was shortlived. The 25th saw a second northerly, more potent than the first. The 26th - 29th saw 4 consecutive days below 15°C, the coldest of which was the 26th, when it reached only 11.6°C - the lowest such reading in September since 1994.

Most remarkable was the temperature of the second half, it averaged only 12.9°C, almost cancelling out the excessively warm start. The 21st August - 16th September also saw a 27 day long dry spell, with no measurable rain. Overall an interesting month, though slightly disappointing in that it contained no thunderstorms.

The first three weeks of the month was characterised by fine and dry weather thanks to dominant high pressure in the mid Atlantic, although temperatures were unexceptional and interrupted by just one short cool interlude. It became increasingly windy and the last week was rather cool and wet. Rainfall for September was 39% of average, inside the driest quartile since recording began in 1984, with half the monthly rain total falling on the 24th.
