My October 2007 Report.

Pressure was generally high over the country during the first half of October. Apart from a little rain on the 8th and 9th, the weather here in Burton was mostly settled, but very cloudy at times, with typical anticyclonic gloom conditions predominating, the temperatures were mostly above average, although there were a couple of cool nights when skies cleared for a time.

The 16th saw a change as the pressure gave way temporary and allowed a trough of low pressure to cross-southern areas of the UK. This gave 7mm of rain here in Burton. However by the 17th pressure was already rising quickly from the west, but this time the air was relatively cooler and clearing skies on the morning of the 17th allowed thick fog to develop for morning rush hour.

The next four mornings saw much cooler temperatures with early fog and I recorded the first air frost of the season on the 20th, with a minimum air temperature of –0.5c. The days though were largely sunny with average temperatures.

There was another short period of anticyclonic gloom on the 25th and 26th, before unsettled and rainy weather spread from the west on the 27th. It also became very mild during this period and it is also worthy of note that on the 27th, the 24 hour recorded maximum temperature of 15.4c was at 08:32am. High pressure from the south west again took control towards the end of the month making for a dry, bright and very mild finish.

Summary.

A notably dry month once again with only 18mm of rain being recorded here. It was also a mixed month temperature wise, with a few cold nights producing 6 ground frosts and 2 air frosts. Some very mild days were also noted with a high of 19c on the 12th. The mean temperature came in slightly above the mean October average at 10.7c.

Another warm October, the third in a row. The first half of the month was very warm, with a mean 13.3°C, some 2.5°C above average. Only 4 of the first 16 days of the month failed to reach 15°C. 11 days had double-digit minima. The 12th was the warmest day, reaching 20.3°C after a low of 14.3°C.

The weather then changed after the 16th, hearalding much cooler conditions. The period 17th - 26th was rather cool, averaging only 9.7°C, a result of supressed maxima. The minima however were closer to average, with 4.8°C the coldest reading of the month early on the 19th. The final 5 days were then very mild, hence the second half of the month was just about average overall.

One key feature of the month was its anticyclonic nature. Only 5 days recorded any measurable rain. The 9th saw 29.1mm, disguising an otherwise exceptionally dry month.
