    The second half of December 1961 was very cold with severe frosts and freezing fog. This was a result of high pressure which dominated the second half of that month. As New Year approached, pressure fell and many places especially in the south had notable snowfalls resulting in the usual transport chaos. It was a very cold and white New Year.

    Yes, late December 1961 appeared to have the classic setup of a Greenland High, Scandinavian Low, and a southerly tracking jet bringing snowfalls to the south as the Atlantic fronts pushed against the Arctic airmass, followed by a three-day northerly around New Year. As the saying goes, "They don't make 'em like they used to".
