    December 2007 Report.

The beginning of the month saw a typical weather pattern for early December, low pressure, rain, strong winds and temperatures very much on the mild side.

The 10th saw a sudden change from a strong zonal flow from the Atlantic to a quickly building high pressure block from the south. I recorded the first air frost of the month on the 11th. The high pressure began to transfer NE on the 11th towards Scandinavia, bringing a light easterly wind.

The following 2 weeks saw little change, frost continued at night and was moderate at times when the sky cleared. The days were very much on the cold side with frost often persisting in the shade. There was some sunshine, but also a good deal of low cloud at times.

The 24th finally saw the high-pressure sink away south east and weaken, this allowed low pressure to approach the country from the Atlantic, bringing unsettled and much milder and at times wet weather for the Christmas period. The period from the 26th until the end of the month continued mild with SW winds dominating.

    Summary.

A very mild start to December, becoming much colder for the middle part of the month with the temperature very much below average. The last week saw a return to very mild conditions. The mean temperature here was 4.5c –0.6 below the 1971-2000 CET average.

    hi Paul

    re this

Mean temperature = 6.5c -0.4c below the 1971-2000 CET average.

seems a bit too high to me?

I would expect your value to be below mine and that was 5.0C?

A month with a mild beginning and end, but a cold middle. The first 8 days were Atlantic dominated, seeing a mixture of showers and longer spells of rain, dumping 40mm in total. It was also exceptionally mild, averaging 8.1°C - 3.0°C above average.

The 9th - 24th were then anticyclonic and cold, with an average of 3.7°C. It started off clear and sunny at first, but as the wind gained more of an easterly component, cloud was dragged in from the North Sea and it turned overcast and dull. As a result, frosts were at a premium, though it cleared for a time to give 2 air frosts on the 16th and 17th, the only ones of the month.

The final days were then much the same as the first few: mild, wet and windy. As a result, both the rainfall and temperature were close to average, though once again it was completely snowless.
