I bought a couple of books secondhand from Amazon marketplace sellers. The first was the Reader's Digest "Weather" hardback which was an interesting read but didn't go into enough detail as to why things happen - grand total of £2.99 delivered though so can't complain as it's a nice book and I'll let my daughter have a read of it too. The second was this one which is utterly fascinating and explains things so well - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0131496964 "Understanding Weather & Climate" - managed to pick this up for just over a tenner and it's worth every penny and more. I'm only about 20 pages in but it's fabulous! It's an American book though so more geared to weather events in the states and Canada.
