And it's -47 C at Watson Lake, Yukon about the same latitude as Kirkwall.

Your cold spell will pale in to insignificance compared to ours coming this weekend.

Has been a clear and a much colder night than recently with an air frost and fog, minimum air temperature near –1c, grass temperature –4c. Currently at 9am, ground frost and bright with the sun breaking through light fog. The morning continued bright but cooler than recently. The afternoon saw more cloud but it stayed dry with a light wind.
