I know the strong La Nina Winters since 1950 were 1949-50, 1973-74, 1975-76, 1988-89, 1998-99 and 1999-2000.

The weak to moderate La Nina winters were 1950-51, 1954-55, 1955-56, 1962-63, 1964-65, 1970-71, 1974-75, 1984-85, 1985-86, 1995-96, 2000-01 and 2005-06. You will notice that in this list virtually all weak to moderate La Nina winters since 1950 (1974-75 apart) at least produced some severe cold or were close to average at least.

I do not know of them pre 1950. Kevin, can you tell me them or point me in the right direction if you know the strong / weak La Nina winters pre 1950?

I ask this question partly now as one thing is certain, we are now looking at a winter at least as mild and as bad as the last two strong La Nina Winters in 98-99 and 99-00, which had a similar strength La Nina to this winter.

What date in the year can you confidently tell whether it is going to be a strong or weak la nina or strong or weak el nino or neutral winter...

I have used this site in the past to help with my winter Cet guesses.

http://www.ccb.ucar.edu/lanina/report/mantua.html

It doesn't give the actual numerical strength but is a fairly good guide.
