A friend of mine asked me this....

I was going to ask you about I remember one night when I was coming home form work about 4 in the morning, I seen the moon and it looked like if I reach out my hand id touch it, it looked that big.

How, this must be something to do with the movement of the moon circling the earth and when it at its nearest?

I haven't got a clue so thought I would ask you lot

    Hope you can help ;)

Its an optical illution. When the moons low near the horizon it seems bigger eventhough its realy the same size. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/4619063.stm

Have a look at this from a few years ago.

FFO - these are 'doctored' right?

They are all real not doctored.

This is one of my favourites - not very aesthetic but the technical accomplishment is staggering. It shows the Internationation Space Station and The Space Shuttle Atlantis just prior to docking and both transiting the face of the sun.

You need one hell of a good telephoto lens (read telescope), be at the right place on earth to within a few hundred mtrs with a less than 1 second window of opportunity, perfect weather and a very steady hand! A literal case of blink and you miss it!
