A nice April, but of course, won't be like last year.

Calrissian: 8.5

8.2, a very mixed month. low pressure trying to displace higher, and i think the month is going to be a battleground between the two, with showers and good spells of sunshine. i think may could well be milder and wetter.

Northern blocking and persistent N/NE winds, he says hopefully, so I'll persist with the below average forecasts and go for 6.9c

The countryfile forcast says a cloudy anticyclonic returning maritime tropical airmass will set in by Thursday giving mild temperatures by both day and night over the UK (as high as mid double figures). This will certainly dampen chances of a below average April if it lasts too long.

Yes but the latest charts suggest a return to a northerly setup after that, which could bring the CET right down; it all depends on how long it lasts.

looks like the first 10 days are going to be a battle between the warmer air and the colder air coming in after Thursday. If i was to make a punt I'd say the mild will just outweigh the cold in the first 10 days, because I'd expect the CET zone to return some decent maxes this week.

With a negative AO progged for the first half of the month, I expect a couple of N'ly blasts to peg back the CET value. Although the second half of the month should be milder with warmer daytime temps, I expect high pressure to be a strong feature so with clear skies and lower minimas I predict the CET to come in just above average at 8.5C

Above average but with cooler spells so nothing like last year. I'll go for 8.7c.

Yes it's a cloudy high so i just don't get the excitement over a few days of mild cloudy rubbish, you're wrong though on that it will dampen the chances of a below average April, cold air arrives very swiftly by saturday and completely dominates the warmer air for the first half of April.

The thing to note is that there hasn't been an April that was at least 1C below the average since 1989, infact there hasn't been an April that was at least 0.5C below the average since 1989.

Compare that to the other months and their last occasion they were at least 0.5C below the average (1971-2000 averages)

January: 2001

February: 2006

March: 2006

May: 1996

June: 1991

July: 2007

August: 2007

September 1994

October: 2003

November: 2005

December: 2005

Also note how its been a while since we had a May or June that was at least 0.5C below the average.

For simplicity, just using 1971-2000 averages, the last time April and May were both at least 0.5C below was in 1983

How does the list shape up if we take a cut off point of at least 1.0c below the 1971-2000 mean, Mr D?.

I tend to categorise any month with a negative anomaly of 1.0c or more as a 'cold' month whereas a negative anomaly of 0.5c doesn't quite cut it as a 'cold' month.

Not overly warm, with the odd colder interlude - I'll go for 8.0c.
