Forget what other people think....just do what you have to do and what you feel is right.

If it were clear and every streetlamp went off then maybe I could for once take some decent astronomy pics without streetlamp light thrown up into air. But so far, crap skies and apart from Touchwood Shopping Centre here in Solihull, (about 7 miles to my south) no-one else seems to give a tom tit?

And confessionally, nor do I! What point is it going to prove after all?

Phil.

Raising awareness.

The next step could be performing weekly shutting off all electricity for one hour.

:)

I'd ban Sunday trading - it would save millions of tonnes of CO2, because shops are notorious wasters of electricity, with their open doors with fans blasting down hot air in the winter, and open freezer cabinets. More importantly, we'd get nice quiet Sundays back (and no I'm not a religious nut!)

Only thing I'm aware of, PP is the hike in fuel prices, and with no real justification.

And switching off electricity for an hour per week. I'm old enough to remember (Ok, I was only 4!) but when there was a general strike and you never knew when the electricity would be cut off, and for how long.

And looking outside as I type at 20:32... I see nothing unusual with lights on in neighbouring houses. Looks like one or two more to be honest. :)

It's now called commercialism, Duncan. if the tills are ringing, the fat cat corporates are singing. (All the way to the bank usually! )

Not much looking at the graph on the national grid website, 500-1000KW I reckon at most going by the graph. Of course some of this may be down to general decline in energy demand at this time of day.

Does the futility of these initiatives, targeted at the individual, not convince anyone of the need for more drastic measures, like carbon rationing?

People keep being asked to 'do their bit' and time after time fail to reduce their wastefulness. As we can see from some comments, some deliberately do the opposite.

This whole thing is getting very silly and dangerous. There are those who hate the modern way of life and are trying to return us to a stone age way of life and using the lie og global warming as a way to cut back on engery close power plants and prevent new one from being built. if they get there way the world will slow down and every one will be worse of including the poor. What we should be doing is getting our selves ready for a long period of cooling. this is what the sun is telling us. Another little ice age would be far worse for the world than a warmer climate. History has clearly shown when Europe was warming there were good crops and the warmth and good food lead to stable socities. But when the little ice age came crops failed and this caused mass starvation and wars. The same thing could occur again if we do not get ready. Europe north Americal and parts of Russia are among the most important crop growing regions of the worls. these areas would be most hit by cooling. In Europe and The U.K for example another little ice age with bitter winters and temps down to -20 and were snow will fall in feet and lay on the ground for many weeks will cause massive transport problems a high death rate and the cooler summers with periods of heat and drought along with flooding and storms will hit farming hard. If our crops fail then we all become poorer as a result. Now if the rich nations of the world were to become poorer then the poor nations of the world would really suffer because we would be less able to provide food and help them. things could get very nasty in a cooler climate. This Is what we should really be worried about

Is one's ability to understand science related to competence in writing good English?

I went to a sell out gig in the local town hall last night. It was an Earth Hour event, during which the lights were dimmed, candles lit and musicians played acoustically. Symbolic, of course, with no measurable effect on global energy use in itself, but awareness raising nevertheless. Perhaps Louth will soon be added to the growing list of Transition Towns, preparing itself for a future where oil will be in very short supply and the burning of any fossil fuel will be regarded as a threat to the human species.

burning coal is no threat to the planet. infact it is coal that lifted us out of a medieval primitive way of life and gave us power. there are those who hate the modern way of life and want to return us to the stone age way of life. coal is the best thing we have and it does not carry the dangers of other engery means like nucler. what some dont seem to understand that if the rich world got poor so will the third world because the rich world world will be less able to help the poor.
