Comments:

A very eventful month.

Snowfall on the 6th produced 5.5cm of snow cover. Wintry precipitation including hail fell on another 6 days during the month. Although there were no thunderstorms, thunder was heard on 3 occasions, albeit that on 2 of those it was fairly distant. With 5 air frosts it was a frostier month than either January (0) or March (4). Taking measurements to 18z daily, there were only 8 days on which no precipitation at all was recorded, making it an unusually wet month; actual rainfall total being 155% of average for the area and also being in stark contrast to April 2007. Average temp was 0.9c below any previously recorded (since 2003) and 3.6c below that of 2007.

In contrast to 2007, April lived up to its usual reputation for unpredictable weather. Although temperatures, rainfall and sunshine were near average at the end of the month, that hides some notable day-to-day variations. A high temp of 19.2 °C on the 4th was followed by a max of only 3.5 °C two days later. The heaviest and most prolonged snowfall of the November to April 2007/2008 period happened on the 6th which was also the coldest April day I have recorded here. There were plenty of downpours, also with hail and thunder, as well as fog.

BRISTOL, North Somerset

A typical showery April though colder than average, especially in the first half.

The month started on a settled note with sunshine to be had on all first five days. It was very warm with 14.5C on the 2nd and 19.1C on the 3rd with clear skies all day.

A sudden change brought northerly winds and wintry showers overnight 5th/6th. 5cm lay on the Mendip hills on the morning of the 6th though nothing below that. There were wintry showers throughout the day, a mix of hail and snow. The 7th and 8th continued this trend with a mix of rain, hail and snow showers, the 8th seeing more sun and the 7th more showers. It was a very frosty start on the 8th with -2.2C recorded overnight.

By the 9th, slightly milder air began arriving. It was a more settled day with showers staying confined to elsewhere allowing sunny intervals. A bright start on the 10th was followed by a long line of slow moving thundery downpours which made themselves known in the afternoon. Showers continued intermittently on the 11th and 13th though the 12th escaped the showers allowing for some pleasant spring sunshine. The 14th saw a repetition of the showers developing, locally torrential with thunder reported.

After a frosty start with a minimum of -1C on the 15th, the following few days were largely dry and quite sunny with fair weather cumulus variable during the day. The 18th however saw more cloud arrive from the east resulting in a maximum of only 9.3C.

It became slightly more unsettled over the weekend with outbreaks of rain. After a cold start, temperature gradually improved from 10.2C on the 19th to 14.1C on the 20th. The 21st stayed mainly dry but a slow clearance of cloud prevented what was a forecasted high of 17C.

The 18th was warm and sunny after some early mist with a beautiful high of 18.2C.

Overnight rain cleared early on the 23rd allowing for sunny skies to dominate the rest of the day. It was another warm day with a high of 17.3C. Thundery showers followed on overnight and into the early hours of the 24th with locally intense downpours. These once again cleared allowing a fresher but bright day nonetheless with showers again confined to the southeast Bristol.

It became more settled through the 25th, albeit rather cloudy and disappointing at first. The 26th was the best day with unbroken warm sunshine all day and a high of 20.2C, the highest of the month. Again, the 27th followed suit for much of the morning an early afternoon before torrential downpours arrived later in the day resulting in localised flooding and thunder was reported at a distance towards Bristol.

The month ended on an unsettled, showery note with very heavy hail showers around throughout the 28th, but the worst again staying to the southeast of Bristol. Early showers cleared on the 29th only to be followed by a band of very heavy rain in the afternoon, again resulting in some localised flooding. After clearance, a few showers followed but the 30th was mainly dry, bar a few showers later in the evening.

April 2008 Report.

The first few days of April were fairly mild and dry with a south westerly air stream . A change took place on the 5th as the wind switched northerly bringing much colder conditions with snow and frost, the early hours of the 6th saw a particularly heavy fall of snow for this area for early spring, giving a good covering of 5cm of powder snow, which lasted in the shade well in to the afternoon.

The chilly spell turned out to be quite a lengthy one here, with 11consecutive nights of ground frost from the 6th to the 16th, with some of those frosts being quite sharp. Fog, hail and snow showers were also noted.

The period from the 17th to the 20th saw a period of cool NE winds, although due to persistent cloud cover, no frost was recorded during overnight periods.

On the 21st we gradually lost the cool NE winds and 15c was reached, the highest temperature since November 2nd (16.4c) so a change to much warmer and brighter conditions began as pressure began to rise to the south of the UK. Here the temperature reached 17.6c on the 22nd and 19.2c on the 27th, but was followed by heavy rain and thunder that evening, heralding a change to average temperatures, unsettled, showery conditions which continued to the end of the month.

Summary

A very mixed, but very interesting month for the weather observer, with sleet, snowfall, hail, thunder, fog and frost, but also some bright sunny warm days here. Temperature wise the month came in about average with the mean being 8.0c.

April was a quite cool munth for here with the mean temp slightly below average and precipitation was slightly above average. also notable that the highest temps were in the first 3 days of the month. There was also quite a lot of days with convective showers around in the afternoon which is pretty normal for april. Some snow fell on the 6th but didnt settle very well here at only 26m asl. but there was a temporary covering on the hills around here.

A very varied, eventful month. It began warm, but a notable northerly plunge brought the most significant snow event of the season, with 5cm of wet snow early on the 7th- the deepest in April since I started taking records, and the deepest on any day since 4 March 2006. The maximum of 5.1C on the 6th, and the minimum of -2.0C on the 15th, were both the lowest in April since 1999. The 6th (mean temp 1.6C) was the coldest April day since my records began, just beating 14 April 1999.

The month's hail frequency, at 7 days, was second only to March 1995 in the entire record.

Although sunshine and showers dominated the first half, the second half was generally cloudy with gloomy easterlies until after the 20th, and then warm but mainly cloudy weather towards the end of the month. Thunder was heard on two days but only distantly (nothing on the scale of what I got here in Norwich).

Statistically, it was the coolest April since 2001 and the wettest since 2005. Sunshine wise it was probably the dullest since 2004, with the relatively sunny first half easily wiped out by the dull second half.

Overall, a close to average month but very wet. The average temperature of the month was 8.4°C, making it the coolest April since 2001. The month consisted of many showery days and had the first lying snow at 0900 in April since 2005.

The first 4 days started warm, reasonably sunny and dry. It then changed abruptly from the 5th as a cold northerly airflow brought low temperatures and heavy snow showers. The 6th saw a minima of -0.8C, the lowest April reading since 2003. The evening of the same day then saw heavy frontal snow. The cold weather continued for the next fortnight, though it was much duller later on in an easterly airflow. The period 1st-20th averaged just 7.2°C.

The last 10 days then turned much milder, with sunshine and heavy, even thundery showers. The warmest day was the 27th, when after a minima of 11.2°C, it reached 18.5°C - the highest figure for the month. Once again rainfall was more than 150% of average, the 3rd such month so far in 2008.
