Exceptional cold spell continues

The unusually early wintry spell of weather is set to continue during the next few days, and there will be the prospect of sharp overnight frosts and further sleet or snow in places.

Wednesday looks set to be bitterly cold with temperatures across parts of the UK peaking at no higher than 4C! Rain, sleet and snow is likely to develop in the west and possibly push into more central areas later.

The wintry weather is being brought about by an arctic airstream coming directly the north pole

Reasonably quiet outlook

There will be some showers around coastal districts during the next couple of days and the possibility of some heavy rain developing on Saturday in the south east, but elsewhere it should often be dry but still rather chilly. We are in an interesting spell of weather with cold air stacking up to our north and little sign of the usual conveyor belt of mild weather systems moving north west across the Atlantic to displace it. We'll be keeping an eye on this pattern because our view is it does bring the potential for a severe wintry outbreak to develop this side of the New Year.

Heavy rain in the south east

The update we issued on Thursday mentioned the possibility of some heavy rain developing on Saturday in the south east. This looks likely to happen, and the rain may well push into central areas and East Anglia too, so for some having early fireworks the conditions may be very poor. Other areas should be mostly dry but still rather chilly. We are in an interesting spell of weather with cold air stacking up to our north and little sign of the usual conveyor belt of mild weather systems moving north west across the Atlantic to displace it

Mixed week ahead

The next few days should bring some fairly quiet weather to much of the UK with a good deal of dry weather, although there is likely to be some mostly light rain in places. A change may well begin to take place during the second half of the week with an increasing chance of wet and very windy weather pushing in from the Atlantic. Temperatures will be generally close to the average, but compared with recently it will feel noticeably milder for most of the country.

Very unsettled this weekend

A complete change in the weather will develop during the next 48 hours as the dry and quiet spell of weather ends and is replaced by very wet and at times windy conditions. The change will be brought about by a low pressure system and its associated weather fronts moving in from the Atlantic and crossing the entire country. Temperatures should remain close to the seasonal average in southern areas, but in the north it may well be cool enough at times for some snow over higher ground.

The unsettled theme looks likely to continue during next week.

Improving towards the weekend

Thursday looks set to bring cloud and rain to much of the country but once that clears it does look as though things will begin to improve. During the weekend it may well turn very mild in southern and central areas with temperatures reaching 15C locally

Some rain this weekend

Outbreaks of rain are expected to gradually push southwards during the weekend. Rather cold air to the north of the rain, with mild air to the south. The early part of next week looks likely to bring further rain to most of the country. Beyond that there is a good deal of uncertainty, but we do think there's a good chance of the weather turning colder late in the week with overnight frost developing quite widely, and the risk of some sleet or snow showers in the north east. Things should become clearer during the next few days so check back for more news.

Mild start, snow later in the week

The week ahead looks likely to bring a real mix of weather. The early part will bring some rain to most of the country, and in southern areas in particular it will be on the mild side at times. A significant change looks like developing during the second half of the week as much colder air from the north sweeps down across the whole country to bring what looks like the second wintry snap of the autumn. Overnight frost could develop widely by the weekend and there will be a risk of snow. At the moment this looks to be concentrated in eastern areas. Milder air may well return by the end of the weekend, but there are some signs the next few weeks bringing several colder spells to all of us

Turning cold, snow in places

Much colder conditions are expected to develop during the next 48 hours as pressure builds in the Atlantic allowing a northerly airstream to develop across the UK. As well as colder conditions there will be a risk of some snow, and at the moment it looks as though the highest risk of this will be in northern and eastern areas where several centimetres may fall. In these areas it will also be very windy for a time and this could lead to blizzard conditions over higher ground locally. We're also keeping an eye on the possibility of a small feature developing in the north west on Friday and slipping down through central parts of the country during the evening and overnight which could bring a light covering of snow to these areas.

Frost is also likely to develop widely on Friday night, and again in in much of England and Wales on Saturday night. Sunday may see a band of precipitation and somewhat less cold conditions returning from the north west. Despite this the colder theme does look set to continue during the first half of next week.

The Next 14 Days

Headline: Bitterly cold, snow likelyMonday 17/11

-Tuesday 18/11

-Wednesday 19/11

- Thursday 20/11

-Friday 21/11

Much colder conditions will push down from the north during the day and should cover the entire country by late evening. In northern and eastern areas showers will develop and these will be increasingly turning to snow. Frosty overnight with further snow showers in eastern areas, and a low possibility of some mainly light sleet or snow for a time in Wales and central western parts. Saturday 22/11

A bitterly cold day across the UK. In eastern coastal areas snow showers are likely to develop and become heavy in places. Central and western regions should be mostly dry, although there may be an odd snow shower here too. Very windy in the east which could lead to local blizzards and drifting snow over high ground. Frost developing in the early evening. Sunday 23/11

Cloudy conditions bring rain and possibly some sleet or snow will push south eastwards across the country. Most of the snow should turn back to rain, especially in western areas where it is likely to become significantly milder for a time.

Next week

Often cold or very cold with overnight frost and the chance of snow becoming more widespread at times. It currently looks as though it could be a notably wintry week, and a very unusual one for November. Any milder interludes look likely to be short, but keep checking back for forecast updates as forecast confidence is still quite low and the details will change. Confidence

Risk of lengthy cold spell rises

Much colder weather will move down across the UK during Friday, and it now looks increasingly possible that much of the next two weeks will be cold enough for sleet or snow at times. Some milder interludes are likely, and as ever forecasting cold weather more than a few days ahead is fraught with risk, but at the moment it does look as though we could be heading into a very unusual spell of weather for November. Whether or not snow falls widely is impossible to say at this stage

Winter forecast - possibly the coldest since 1995

Snow fields

TheWeatherOutlook UK winter weather forecast has now been issued and is freely available to all site members. The headline is for the coldest winter since 2001, and possibly the coldest one since 1995 with quite a high probability of several heavy snowfalls, especially in northern areas.

Wintry Thursday with heavy snow in places

Very cold, but mostly dry on Wednesday. On Thursday a mixture of rain, sleet and snow will push in from the west. It looks as though most of the snow will be in central and northern areas, especially over higher ground where 15cm or more could fall. By Friday it should have turned somewhat milder across much of the country, although probably still cold in the north.

Reasonable weekend ahead

The meteorological winter is now under way, and it has been a very cold start with snow and ice in some parts of the country. Something of a change is now underway though and it does look as though it will be less cold, but not mild during the next few days. The weekend should bring some fine winter sunshine to many parts of the country, with temperatures in southern areas close to the seasonal average. Despite temperatures recovering somewhat, there will still be a risk of overnight frost, especially in northern areas. Into next week it does look as though the cold may return. More about that in our next update

Cold week - chance of severe wintry spell grows

A cold week ahead with overnight frost at times, and the possibility of some sleet or snow in places. Things turning interesting at the weekend with some indications of a massive pressure rise to our north east which could lead to a spell of severe wintry weather across western Europe before the end of the year.

Cold week ahead

A cold week ahead with overnight frost at times, and the possibility of some sleet or snow in places. Things turning interesting at the weekend with the possibility of a pattern change in the weather. There is still a chance of it turning colder from the east, but the chances now favour a more mobile and milder westerly pattern.

Here comes the blowtorch!

This has been the coldest start to winter since 1976, and the next few days are likely to be cold across the UK, but it does now look as though a big change will take place in the weather during the second half of the week. Pressure will begin to rise to the south of the country and this will allow south westerly winds to bring double figure temperatures to southern and central parts by Thursday. This is the classic 'blow torch' weather pattern that has often brought mild weather to the UK during recent winters. At the moment our expectation is that it will not last for too long, with cooler conditions probably returning later in December with the chance of further snow during the first half of January in northern areas in particular. However, some other independent forecasters are taking a different view and are suggesting that the blow torch pattern may well dominate for much of January and February. So you can take your pick and decide who you think will be right!

Much milder this weekend

A change to much milder weather is expected to develop during the next few days, and by the weekend daytime maximum temperatures are likely to be in double figures across much of the country. There's still some uncertainty, but it does look as though during the early part of next week temperatures will once again begin to fall and this may well be the start of another rather cold spell of weather. Frost and possibly fog could become quite widespread later next week, and with the festive season approaching this is something we will be keeping a close eye on.

Very cold during the next few days

The weather is set to remain very cold across the country during the next few days, and in places the temperature may struggle to rise above 0C during the daytime. Overnight temperatures will be very low at times leading to widespread moderate or severe frosts. Despite the continuing cold there isn't likely to be much further snow, although a weak weather front may bring a little rain, sleet or snow down across Scotland on Tuesday, and England on Wednesday.

Later in the week it does look as though the high pressure which has brought the cold weather will begin to head south, and this will allow less cold weather to return initially to northern areas, and then probably push south during the weekend.

If milder conditions return they may not last for too long, and our January weather forecast now issued suggests the likelihood of a rather cold month

Becoming milder and unsettled

A major change in the weather is expected in the next few days as high pressure slips away to the south allowing milder and unsettled weather to move in from the Atlantic. Wet and very windy is expected to spread across Northern Ireland and Scotland on Saturday and during Sunday this should extend across most other areas, although the south east may remain dry. The unsettled theme is expected to continue during next week, with close to average temperatures making it feel much milder than it has done since Christmas

Unsettled, wet and windy at times

The weather during the week ahead is expected to be much different to how it has been recently. The cold weather has now been pushed away and the Atlantic is beginning to influence our weather. This means rain and wind at times, with temperatures close to the seasonal average most of the time. So much more typical UK January weather is likely, although there are some indications that during the middle part of the week somewhat colder air may spill back in from the continent for a time. This doesn't look likely to last for long and by Friday the next Atlantic weather fronts should be pushing through. There is still plenty of time for winter though, and at the moment there are indications of colder conditions returning during the second half of the month

Becoming stormy at the weekend

Chilly conditions across central and eastern areas are expected during Wednesday and Thursday. To the north and west it will be wet and windy at times but milder, and by the weekend it looks as though stormy conditions will be extending right across the country, with gale force winds and driving rain pushing in from the Atlantic. So a complete contrast with the cold and dry weather which persisted for the first third of January. However, it does look as though by the end of the weekend temperatures will be falling again. During the first half of next week it looks as though rather cold conditions are likely and with low pressure close by this could mean that there will be some heavy snow in the north and over higher ground in general
