Just as well really:

'Police spokesman Niua Kama told the agency residents did not appear to take the warning seriously.

"People are out on the roads, laughing at the warning," he said.

They were not moving back from the coast despite tsunami warnings, the spokesman added. '

Frontiers of seismology conference this week which I would have liked to have gone to, being a bit of a cheese in UK seismology

http://www.earthquakes.bgs.ac.uk/seis09/

you can read the abstracts anyhow. I'm second author on one. It was spoilt somewhat by an exploration conference in London clashing, and I have to make my living in exploration seismology nowadays with a pregnant wife.

Latest reports now at least 20 dead (more to come I fear) and a large area of devastation

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude of the quake was 6.3, though Italy's National Institute of Geophysics put it at 5.8. The quake struck about 70 miles (110 kilometres) northeast of Rome at 3:32 a.m. local time (0132 GMT), officials said. The Civil Protection Department said the epicenter was near L'Aquila, in the mountainous Abruzzo region. By early morning, the death toll stood at 20, including five children, with some 30 people unaccounted for, carabinieri paramilitary police said. In addition to L'Aquila, the town of Castelnuovo appeared hard hit, with five of the dead there.

yes must be worrying but there is not a lot you can do just now I'm afraid. His phone may be off due to local problems so he may well be okay.

Do you know what the name of the place he was going to? Check that with the list of places affected it may help.

Try and ring the Foreign Off ice and ask if they have any information if he is a British subject.

sorry can't be more helpful

How far north of rome was he staying as the epicenter of the earth quake was 70 miles north of Rome. There are reports of some significant shaking 10 miles from the epicenter, but most of the major damage seems to have occured with that sort of radius.

If you are still worried then you might be advised to locate the british embassy in Rome or you could try ringing one of these numbers.

For information concerning the earthquake in L’Aquila, please call 06 4220 2420 or 06 4220 2351 (from Italy) or Global Response Centre (020 7008 1500, from the UK).

Earthquake nr Ulverston.

Today I was away from home, nr Carnforth, about 5 miles N of Lancaster and thus about 12 miles or so from the epicentre. Got a good shaking from this eartnquake and the rumble was very loud.

Had gone there to look after my grandson and was downstairs sittiing on the sofa at the time. The new double glazing really rattled and at first I thought a big lorry had driven up to the front door. Didn't take it seriously as local quarry blasting takes place. Only found out about the eartnquake when I returned home this evening.
