The mid May period of 1955 was very wintry with widespread snowfalls and severe frosts for the time of the year. A developing low pressure tracked to the south of the UK and pulled up into the North Sea. The northern flank of the low engaged the Arctic air in situ over the UK and there were widespread snowfalls across parts of England and Wales. Over the Pennines, some roads were blocked because of snow.
