This is the first time I've actually seen a fallen tree in Cheltenham due to the wind, and it's strange it should happen in May, although the new leaves would probably have meant the 30-55mph winds will have had more of an effect. Here are two pictures of the fairly large tree which blocked off a road and knocked down a fence:

Hi , yeah we have had a fallen tree in my dads stable not far from Cheltenham. The vale of evesham weather station measured a gust of 33mph this morning ,but of course it could be a stronger gust depending on where you live, my guess across the Severn valley we could have had gust in excess of 50mph and due to full leaf foiliage its not surprising some trees came down.! :)

This is an unusual direction for strong winds, but check out for strong winds in the summer ,Ithink it was [without checking] July 2003....

not much mention of the winds unlike 9-13 march where winds were mentioned a lot on here, the wind seems stronger today than this although on that day i did have a fence down, definitely seems persistently strong today

at least i missed the rain today

ANYWEATHER - yes it's not very often we have winds so strong from the NE, especially at this time of year. It's calming down a little now but MetOffice have more warnings for rain for us overnight, and winds are still gusting to 32mph. Staverton Private (about 4 miles from here) recorded a gust of 56mph with sustained 36mph at 11am this morning: http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=daily;type=maxg & http://www.netweather.tv/index.cgi?action=daily;type=maxw

mark forster and wizzy- yes there hasn't been much mention of the winds on the forum, though the Metoffice have had warnings out and Netweather did point out that it would be windy...

wizzy - I hope the trampoline's okay :) It would have been interesting to have seen a trampoline flying through the air. I remember one year it was another very blustery day and we had a heavy picnic-table umbrella out - it was quite amusing to watch it fly up about 10m as high as the house, into the air before crashing back down!

I am surprised we didn't have any downed trees today, very strong winds. Seems to have calmed down somewhat out there now but it is starting to rain. The leaves are probably exacerbating the situation. If this was January/February the windchill would be unbearable!
