Driest June on record for England and Wales

Not only is June 1925 the driest June on record with just 4.3mm for England and Wales, it is also the 2nd driest month ever for England and Wales with only February 1891 drier. For Scotland, it totalled 32.5mm, for Northern Ireland, it was 20.4mm.

According to synoptic reports of the time, no low crossed the British Isles or indeed between the Iceland and Scotland corridor.

It is reckoned that about 6410 square miles recorded no measurable rain in the British Isles during that month.

Horncastle in Lincolnshire recorded just 0.57 inches from 30th May to 28th July.

Ventnor in Hampshire recorded 0mm from 30th May to 1st of July.

Even looks like a black smudge over Shrewsbury- even August 1995 and April 2007 couldn't manage that. That month seems to have had some fantastic sunshine totals too, doing a search it seems it made 380-odd hours around Cornwall. Interestingly though the CET was 15.0 Trevor Harley's site claims that "overall, temperathures were close to average" (warmest June between 1917 and 1930, and there was only 1 warmer and 1 equal to it between 1982 and 1999- weren't late 80s and 90s Junes rubbish and were 20s ones the same?)

Looks like quite a bit of the SW recorded no rain at all. I'm just in between 2 black smudges on the map.

On a record back to 1871, June 1925, with 4.4 mm, was the second driest month on record at Buxton. The only drier month was September 1959 with 4.2 mm.

Apart from the above, only 5 other months have recorded less than 10mm; these are Jan' 1881 with 9.6mm,

July 1911 with 8.9mm, March 1931 with 6.1mm, Feb' 1934 with 8.1 mm and April 1980 with 9.3mm.

February 1891 managed 17.3mm at Buxton, well below average but not as dry as 1932, 10.2m or 1985, 13.1mm, and equalled in 1993 which also recorded 17.3mm.

Just looked at my local Met office data at Bradford which lists June 1921 as being the driest June in these parts putting 1925 into 2nd place .June 1921 being the driest of any month but April 2011 also beating June 1925.Amazing how dry 1921 must have been also listing the 4th driest month since 1901 with February that year.

In this area June 1925 takes first place with Buxton recording just 4.4 mm and 1921 having 13.9 mm. June 1925 is the second driest of any month on record at Buxton, beaten only by September 1959 with 4.2 mm. In recent years only June 2018, with 11.6 mm, comes close to 1921 and 1925 .

Brazell's good book on London Weather has June 1925 as the driest month with just 0.04 ins of rain falling in the capital, all on the 24th, or just 2% of average. July 1921 follows with 0.15 (6%) of rain and June 1921 had 0.2 ins (12%).

Synoptic rundown

 Cool and showery start to the month.

 A build of pressure from the Azores bringing fine and dry weather to all placed on the 3rd.

 Slack warm pattern with perhaps some very isolated thunderstorms on the 6th.

 Bone dry with dazzling sunshine but probably quite cool nights by the 10th. Beautiful chart.

 Slight attempt at retrogression of the high on the 14th to introduce a cooler airmass, but still fine and dry. Perhaps isolated showers in the east.

 Winds turn northerly on the 21st which probably brought light showers and quite a bit of cloud.

 Remaining dull and cool, particularly in the east by the 24th.

 A battleground between lower and higher pressure by the closing day of the month. Looks quite slack with isolated showers or storms breaking out?

 

You can see how the west was so dry with a near permanent ridge all month.
