This particular little beauty decided to reside in my downstairs toilet last week and has remained there ever since, much to

the delight of my daughter who hates spiders.

Can someone identify this spider for me please?

Not sure...just had a google about and I cant find anything similar nor have I ever seen one like that.

Maybe be on the safe side, get a large jar with a lid with a couple of very small holes in it, carefully knock the spider into it and check with your nearest natural history museum, zoo or with the natural history museum in London? Send them some photos, they may be able to identify it and it is probably perfectly safe.

I've just had a google too, even though I am really scared of spiders, don't know why I put myself through that!

Couldn't find anything but that looks really horrible and like nothing i've seen before. Hope you find out what it is, I'm interested now :D

I've just had a look through some pictures and it might be one of the harvestman group. It looks a bit like a Dicranopalpus ramosus, at least thats the nearest I think.

I don't know what it is, but I do know we get lots of them in our old creaky house! They're like a little fat ball with skinny legs!

It could be, there are 2300 species of Harvestmen aka Daddy Long Legs.

You could post the photo on this forum, someone on there should know for sure...

EDIT: I think Pete has it, just googled that name.

Well done Pete, I think you've cracked it. I see it wasn't originally native to this country, quite a newcomer really.

According to wikipedia, this species is not technically a spider. How does it move with those amazingly long legs??

They're not poisonous but apparently do release an odour when they feel threatened which is desgined to repel predators. Get the Airwick out, quick!

If you get any problems with it Brian I can send my dogs round. One catches them and the other one eats them. Also good at catching Flies, Bees, Moths and anything else that moves. No matter how many times he gets stung our English Setter still wants to catch Bees.

Thanks Pete, that definitely looks like the one.

I have a little problem though. I have just had a peep in the toilet, and I can't find it. :o

Even though this thing is harmless I would feel a lot more comfortable if I knew where it had gone

My worst nightmare! I hate that when I know there's a spider in my room but I lose it. I'm still checking my room every time I go in for a huge spider I lost a few weeks back and i'm really paranoid.

Hope you find it!

It's Ok Mark, I have found it. It had gone for a little wander and it is now sat behind the toilet cistern.

If you prod it's legs it sticks them in the air like feelers.

I'm tempted to get it into a jar and take it outside as soon as possible, preferably quite a few miles away from here

not a harvestman, but a Camel Spider (Solifugiae) - harvestmen don't have those horn-like things out front.

...is a foreign import, isn't poisonous, but can bite if provoked.

Try Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camel_spider

We have already identified it pretty much 100% certainly as a Harvestman Dickie

Yes, I'd say that is definitely the one, SnowBear.

The spider that Dickie posted a picture of (thanks Dickie  ) seems to be too hairy and has much shorter legs.

Also, the spider which is in my toilet appears to sit in an identical resting position as the Harvestman.
