Almost 5 months after devestating Cyclone Nargis, another storm has formed in the North Indian ocean, just off the coast of India, near Calcutta. Thank goodness this one doesn't have much time over water as it is consolidating very quickly. Deep convection is wrapping around the centre of 02B and the is some formative banding features. In around 12 hours time, 02B will make landfall where it will cause problems with rain rather than wind. Large totals could amount up and cause flooding, and mudslides at higher ground. 02B will then slowly dissipate over land.

JTWC has downgraded 02B to a remnant low but IMD have kept it as a tropical depression, and I have to say I agree. Despite a good 24 hours over land, there is still some impressive convection near the well defined centre. In their latest warning, IMD say that 02B could dump over 10 inches of rain in the Orissa area, northeast India. 02B is not forecast to re-emerge over water so it will dissipate soon but not before it causes some flooding I would imagine.

(Mentioning Nargis, the death toll was a lot more than when I last checked, the toll is around 146,000! It is the second deadliest named storm of all time.)

thats a staggering and upsetting amount of lives lost!

Here's the thread about it, as you can see we were talking 40,000 lives lost then, 160,000 is obviously an estimate but obviously a lot more deaths have been considered since then. :(
