Here's a forgotten weather event, the wintry blast of late October 1922. A NEly flow developed across the UK during the last few days of October 1922. This resulted in extensive air frosts and wintry showers in places.

On the 29th, a low moved eastwards to the south of the UK and brought rain sleet and snow to the SW approaches. Falmouth recorded snow falling from midday to about 5pm, the first time in the weather station's recorded history since 1868 of snow falling in Octover. Sleet was reported on the 12th October 1887 and 29th October 1895.

Highly unusual, and which also acts as a salutory reminder that what happens in October isn't necessarily a portent of the winter to come as the winter of 1922/23 was generally mild and rather wet.

This is the synoptic chart from ERA-INTERIM, showing a classic south-west snow setup, but the intensity of cold over the south was certainly unusual for late October.
