I must say this year and last have been terrible so far but i remember april 4th because we had 6-8 foot snow drifts up on the mendips which took couple of weeks to melt and thats one of the best events i seen in last 10 years. lots of smaller falls before that but last 3 years ive seen only few days snow cover even at around 300m which is rare for us.

I remember April 4th because I was moving house; we didn't have anywhere near the amount you had but it was enough for me to seriously doubt whether the removal van would a) arrive and :p be able to get out the village again. A friend from Wedmore was coming to help, a trip up and over the highest point of the Mendips - took her 5 hours and only then achieved by following a tractor.

Bloody smilies, where did that come from?

Thanks to the posters who replied to my previous post.Yes,as expected the usual suspects emerged. However,i was surprised by 3 Blackpool being quite far North but coastal Swansea and most of all Karen from Nottingham, that was a surprise entry to me.

So,its largely a Southwestern quadrant problem although not exclusively. The Eye in the Sky sent me an informative note regarding the demise of our snow friend the Channel Low,last year Steve Murr sent a brilliant but gloomy piece regarding confirmation of the no snow triangle in which i and many live.

As a generalisation.using my Inspector Clueseau powers of deduction i have noticed that Southerly winds are normally mild SW ditto W as recently as 2 days ago gave rain although it was cold so North although cold run out of steam so Now what?

Although NE is best probably for me for wider event is an Easterly probably our best hope,it would be nice to get your opinions. For the record,John holmes kindly gave me his opinion but i dont want you swayed by an ex professional

As before many thanks if you respond

If I recall correctly from my years in the 'snowless Hampshire triangle' it was the serious easterlies that gave us the bast chance of snow in that area. I think the longest period of lying snow in that area in the 20 years to 2002 (when I moved) was in January 1987. Would be interested to see Steve Murr's contribution if you could post a reference to it.

Cheers Noggin, one to avoid then.

I guess a more extreme, colder version of this, is what we should keep our fingers crossed for:

An area Oxford - Burford - Abingdon have seen NO snow. Nothing new there then.

Have seen slight Rain/Snow (Sleet) shower very briefly in October.

Needless to say - nothing in Bournemouth, and not expecting any in the forseeable future unless we get a cold easterly and a channel low. Nothing else does it for us down here except in really exceptional circumstances (eg thundersnow event 2004)

In fact, I havn't seen any since feb/mar 2005, and only the thundersnow in Jan 2004 has produced anything more than the odd flake this century.

Most of Kent has seen very little snow from all this marginal weather even on the Downs there has been very little settling snow. Oh well maybe before Christmas. Dream on.

Crikey, I'm not sure if I could live somewhere like that! I suppose the fact you get a summer worth the name from time to time makes up for it!

None here in county Down as far as I have seen, however I got wind that I may have missed a short light snow shower last week and during October. So far the most I have seen is Sleet......coastal temperatures are still too high to allow for any good snowfall in my area so usually by end of December is when I see some wintriness.

Drive down a few miles south of where you are and have a look at the Mournes.

Nothing last year, and nothing so far this year.

Where were you the other day then?

(if you scroll along far enough there are pictures of kids on the way to school in Carlisle having a snow ball fight and snow in Brampton - just outside Carlisle!)

There was snow here in Tun Wells on the morning of the Sun 23rd Nov, but unfortunately I was in green Wales - so I have yet to see snow this cold season. Last snow I saw was back in early April when we had around 8cms around here.

Ditto for me. Saw falling snow briefly on 23 Nov early on. The snow in April was nearer 5 or 6cms for me. The best part about it was that the snow managed to keep going till early evening with no Spring sunshine to melt any of it. It was quite special keeping a days snowcover fully intact into a frosty moonlit night in April and waking up to a beautiful scene the following morning!

Ni di bod bach mwy lwcus na chi, We have been a little bit more lucky than you in the hills of Glanaman.

But no proper lying snow. Had snow flurries which have left a slight powdered toping ont he car and in this event we had very heavy sleet with snow in it , same can be said for last night up in the Square and compass.

We aint had proper lying snow since April 6th 2008.

Have you noticed though snow always lasts longer up the valley than in ammanford. Places on Betws mountain can see a snow cover for a long while especially behind the perrivale up there as the sun doesn't catch that area mutch at all.

Not a sausage here in winter 2008. (Unless you could seeing some vague tinys spec's of dandruff at 2am snow)

But the winter is young and my hopes are high! Prozac is on order and all will be well.

Please Note: Prozac can only be ordered for use with depression towards the weather. NOT towards the mother in law coming for christmas day ...

As my son says, I live in the anti-snow capital of the UK. Not seen any snow for a few years, and not likely to see any anytime soon!! Often lots of snow on the Cotswolds and in the Forest of Dean, but none in the Vale of Severn.

Not seen a sausage so far this autumn / winter, plenty of time to go ( being ever hopeful) but he reality is Gloucester generally does very poorly for snow and when it does fall it melts fairly rapidly

With the models struggling, the Prozac ordered, and the car crash of emotions underway, Edinburgh has kept its snow shield in place and has had no snow (although there was a sleet-blizzard last night it was all gone by 9:00 am). It's been close but no cigar, although the form horse (even though it's not set in stone) suggests an Easterly in F1 - but it will never happen...it's all up in the air really. But I'm staying positive and keeping the faith, there's even been sleet in Telford. It looks marginal but I feel as if we're on the cusp of something special, just like 47, 63, 81/82. GFS never handles this blocking very well...just ignore the 18z pub run. I have a contact in Lothian Council and they have just ordered a billion tonnes of gritting salt, just as I predicted in Setember.

(with apologies to the 'Netweather swearbox' thread)

Zip Nothing Not a fluffy white snowflake to be seen

Northerly incursions just never pay off so until an easterly shows up i'm not expecting anything.

2 snowfalls, in october and november. lying snow in central london in october, albeit transient was an unusual sight. maybe that's it now. very interesting to see what parts of the uk have been snow free. i always think of central southern england as being the most snowless area these days. it wasnt in the 80's!
