Beautiful clear day, though chilly - the strange thing is that I believe that when the temperatures are say -5c and it is clear with sunshine and no wind, it feels warmer than when the temperature is above freezing. But then temperature and heat are not the same things are they?

3oC here this morning, and mostly cloudy so far.

Strange night though. This morning the roads and cars were frost free, however, looking out of the window during the night (Baby SB1 woke up a few times), a section of about 30m of road here had frost on it. Nowhere else did

Anybody able to explain this?

Morning Chris,

It’s been a case of ground frost melting and refreezing all night, as clear spells have come and gone, with the clear spells ground temperatures have fallen below freezing and risen above during the cloudy periods, all this coupled with a light south westerly breeze mixing the air up. Obviously some surfaces retain a colder temperature for a longer period, thus some areas are clear and others remain frozen, all frost will lift shortly though as the temperature is still on the rise.

Cheers Paul.

I guess it could be something to do with whats underground where the frost has formed and stayed.

Perhaps at a guess, there could be pipework/sewage works underneath, with greater air underneath the surface, perhaps nopt cooling as readily as the ground itself....maybe

After the temperature initially dropped below freezing last night –0.4c, giving an air frost, the temperature slowly began to rise later in the night to around 2c as a south westerly wind brought increasing cloud, although a few more clear periods followed allowing a continuation of a ground frost. The 24 hour period minimum temperature however was as low as –4.4c and the maximum temperature of 3.2c was reached at the end of the 24 hour period ending at 09:00hours. At observation, overcast and rather damp, with the still frozen ground thawing.

Cloudy and cool after another frosty night. (Must be slightly milder than of late as the frost has started to melt all over, which hasn't been the case the last few days.)

The cold, quiet theme of the past 10 days or so continues. After a weekend of wall-to-wall sunshine by day, it's mainly cloudy this morning with a few sunny intervals. Last night (min -1.1) was noticeably less cold than Saturday night (-2.6), presumably because of the arrival of cloud in the early hours. Was staying with friends in Southampton over the weekend - Saturday night produced the hardest frost I've seen in many months, and I suspect the minimum was around -5 there.

A dull day with light rain on the way by looks of it. An odd one out in a week of cold & sunny. Typical as I take a day off work to do xmas shopping and general walking around town!

Now 5c.

Still snow on the ground in Bacup, I wish it would go now as it's very icy.

Raining lightly, fog getting thicker here in Bury, just downright miserable.
