I'm after a textbook on Meteorology. I have a few normal weather books but they aren't very in depth. I'm looking for something a bit more detailed and thought maybe the books you get at uni would be better. I know they will be more complicated but if I read them enough it will probably sink in.

I just feel i've hit a mental block and not learned anything new for ages, so I want to challenge myself

Can anyone recommend anything?

Thanks

Sounds like a good course that, maybe one day...

The classic is Holton's Dynamic Meteorology. Some of it is on Google Books.

Thanks for that J07.

 There's an awful lot of equations in there, my worst nightmare!

I didn't expect anything THAT complicated.

I've found this one which seems good, and hopefully not quite as confusing...

And gets a couple of good reviews on Amazon...

That's looking like my favourite from what i've found so far.

Keep the suggestions coming :)

EDIT: This looks a good one too...

Yeah it's reasonably extreme.

Id' say it's essentially a physics or applied maths textbook. Meteorology is a branch of physics so there has to be equations at some point, I guess it depends on the approach as to how many are included. That book is not straightforward by any means for many people, including those with solid mathematical backgrounds. But I suppose the struggle in working through it means that once you know it, you really know it inside out. And it's value for money! Probably won't help anyone answer the question "will it rain tomorrow?" though :)

In general terms there's no need to be afraid of equations, even though it's probably fair to say that most people in the country do feel that way, perhaps due to how it is taught at school (?). An equation sums up several paragraphs worth of text in one concise form. It's like a picture, it tells a thousand words, and often even more. One of the best examples being "Euler's formula" e^(i*pi) = - 1 , very very simple looking, but is considered by many to be the most beautiful equation, and it links mathematics, physics, engineering, philosophy and history all into one amazingly concise nugget.

Gone for this one ^^^

Looks like i'll have to pay £44, which isn't too bad I guess, all these textbook type things seem expensive.

These seem the only place to have it in stock...

Ahrens is a good book. It was our required reading in the first year of meteorology at Reading Uni. Very qualitative with detailed descriptions, so it's not too heavy going if you don't have a mathematical background. Atmospheric Science by Wallace and Hobbs is another one I'd recommened. Similar to Ahrens, but more mathsy. You just have to overlook the typos ^_^
