The year started off dull cloudy and stormy with rain, gusts up to 104mph was recorded at the end of January making it the worse storm since 2005. Through spring we had good sunny dry weather. We had a fair summer but the end was wet and windy. Through Autumn it was wet and windy again with 101mph gust on 25th October. The end of the year was very wet but the high pressure at the end made up for it bringing good sunshine days.

Overall the year came in at 9.5C the coolest year since 1995 and when you consider how warm it all started 9.5C is remarkable end result.

December was the coolest December since 1996 as well. Yet despite this only a brief covering of snow during the month. A pathetic depth of 1cm as well.

December was the driest since 2005 recording only 61.3mm of rain despite a wet start. The year was the wettest since 2002 with 983mm of rain.

Not the UK, but may be of interest. This was the 3rd wettest year on record. Wellington is a very temperate place, with few extremes, except with regards to wind. This winter was very wet, possibly the wettest winter I've experienced either here or in the UK (not sure though, total rainfall was 600mm in the three months).

In terms of temperature, every month here was pretty much bog standard, except May which was notably cold (clearly, when the mean temp for June was identical!)

    Wellington City, New Zealand:

Month: Mean Temperature; Total Rainfall; Total Sunshine hours

    January: 17.8C; 33mm; 271 hours

    February: 17.7C; 54mm; 223 hours

    March: 16.9C; 170mm; 216 hours

    April: 14.3C; 210mm; 176 hours

    May: 10.4C; 100mm; 139 hours

    June: 10.4C; 136mm; 123 hours

    July: 9.2C; 252mm; 94 hours

    August: 9.2C; 205mm; 155 hours

    September: 11.0C; 181mm; 127 hours

    October: 12.4C; 89mm; 202 hours

    November: 14.1C; 98mm; 239 hours

    December: 16.0C; 132mm; 228 hours

    2008: 13.5C; 1662mm; 2205 hours

    Highest Max: 29C

    Highest Min: 19C

    Lowest Max: 7C

    Lowest Temperature: 2C

    Air frosts: 0

    Days of falling sleet: 1

    Highest Wind Gust: 84mph

    Highest UV Index: 14

Just a quick comparison with the closest one above, the most notable aspect is that compared with Paul, I received 50% more sunshine, but 300% more rain also.

For New Zealand as a whole, a place of reasonable variation as usual. One somewhat interesting statistic is that November saw snow fall to sea level in Southland, with 20cm in places, and 33C recorded in the Wairarapa (which actually wasn't a record for them), about 2 weeks apart.

Extreme Max: 35C (happened in both January and March)

    Extreme Min: -10C

Highest Wind Gust: 114mph (happened in two different places on two different days, and amazingly was from the east on both occasions)

Driest Place: Alexandra with 376 mm

Wettest Place: Cropp River, near Hokitika with 10,940 mm

Sunniest Place: Blenheim with 2505 hours

Warmest Place: Leigh with a Mean Annual Average Temperature of 16.5C

NIWA's brief summary of the months:

January: very dry and settled conditions

    February: unsettled, with low pressures

March: dry and settled (much like January)

April: warm, moist northeasterlies affected the North Island

May: wet and cold easterlies predominated

    June: strong southwesterlies prevailed

    July: unsettled, with low pressures

    August: wintry southerlies occurred frequently

September: a switch to warmer northwesterlies

    October: tending more westerly

November: back to warm, northwesterlies (similar to September)

    December: moist northeasterlies.
