    December 2008 Report.

A cold month, especially the first half and very frosty too with 13 air frosts up to the 16th and 15 ground frosts. Also two morning of light snow cover at morning observation at 09:00GMT. The mean temperature up to the 16th was 1.4c, the coldest start to December since I began keeping records in 2005.

Daily notes: 7th Still moderate to severe hoar frost at 09:00 GMT after a night minimum of –5.1c. The frost persisted in shaded areas here all day.

12th, Glazed frost: After a frosty night, minimum –3.1c, the day dawned overcast with light rain, but as the air temperature was around freezing point and ground temperature still several degrees below, the rain immediately turned to ice on impact with the ground, creating sheet ice conditions for a time.

31st: Very cold overnight and this morning with dense freezing fog. Minimum –4.9c and –7.5c on the grass. The day remained very cold with a persistent frost, though the fog lifted in to low cloud by mid afternoon.

Maximum temperature –1.9c, making this the coldest day since I began keeping records in 2005 and the coldest from local data since December 2000 (-2.7)

The coldest December since 2001, though with no great extremes. Suprisingly for such a cold month, it was wetter than average. There were also only 4 air frosts and no lying snow to speak of. It was also rather dull due to low cloud from the North Sea. Indeed, after the 23rd, there was no sunshine at all.

The month started off cold, with a mixture of Atlantic-based weather and northerly winds. Daytime temperatures remained below 6°C until the 12th, though a trend of cloudy nights was evident, keeping away frosts on all but the 3rd and 12th. Temperatures then drifted slowly to around average, with the first half of the month averaging just 3.2°C (-1.9°C). The first 15 days saw almost all of the rainfall too, with only 5mm falling thereafter.

From the 18th-23rd, it then turned very mild. Temperatures surpassed 11°C on 3 days and night minima were above 6°C. It quickly turned cold however, but 1.5°C had been added onto the monthly mean in just 7 days. The remainder of the month was the same every day: cold, overcast and aside from the final two days, frostless too. There were however more cold maxima, with the 31st just missing an ice-day in the final 20 minutes of recording (Max: 0.2°C).

Overall, a pretty benign month. However once again it had less frosts than average and was the 4th snowless December in 5 years.
