Inspired by Osbourne-one-nil's photo's of Hell Gill force from the other day, I decided to have a trot out that way myself this morning. For those that don't know, its in Mallerstang, which is in the extreme south east of Cumbria on the border with Yorkshire, and is the beginings of the River Eden before it is called the Eden. Also to be seen are Wild Boar Fell, Hugh Seat, Great Dun Fell, Cross Fell (in the distance) and a view down the length of the upper Eden valley. It was very cold, when I set off from Longridge at 6 30 it was -6, by the time I got to Sedbergh it was -8.5, it was -9 at Garsdale, -11 at Garsdale Head and where I parked my car near Aisgill a rather choppy -12 (according to my car thermometer). When I got back to the car at 10 15 it was still -10 and I had trouble pulling away, the car was juddering, some of its vital fluids must have gone a bit thick.

Appologies for the enormous size of the photos, the camera was on the wrong setting!

Very good pics and i love the way how the weak winter sun makes the mountains glow orange-looks very nice! well done!

PS- About the juddering with your car, you sure you wasnt spinning the wheels on all the ice/snow creating the juddering? :o

Looks familiar! Slightly better than my Blackberry managed. Did you walk along the Highway? There were so many gates frozen solid into the ground which I'd have loosened for you if you did!

I used to live in Nateby and had wonderful views over towards Tailbridge Hill on one direction, High Seat in another, and where Wild Boar Fell should have been, a big yellow rusting articulated lorry trailer and a bunch of inbred sodding neanderthals and their scrap yard.

Ho hum!

Yeah I did, you'd done a good job on the gates, they were as good as gold! I'd never walked along there before, safe to say I'll be doing it again, I usually just head up Wild Boar Fell. Fantastic part of the world, possibly my favourite part of Cumbria, which by reckoning makes it the greatest place on earth. Didn't see another soul, unless sheep & grouse have souls.
