Our attention having been drawn to such events as Sudden Stratospheric Warming by this paper, we now get an event at the north pole of considerable magnitude. What next?

Wow, those temperartures have risen in excess of 50C in no time at all. I assume this is significant as well as very unusual?

Could this mean not only are we to expect a very cold February 2009, but continuing into summer with very cool and disturbed conditions?

Apparently these SSWs are caused by Rossby waves "breaking", propagating upward into the stratosphere and happen during the winter months. Here's a poster.

As to what the effect will be, we shall have to wait and see.

Many thanks for poster - think I'll have a look either tomorrow or next week, am a bit tired to make sense of formulae tonight.

Loads of discussion on the Winter discussion forum under Stratosphere Temperature Watch - spent the last couple of hours reading through the thread! :)
