Down to -5.5 now

Last night at this time was -10.0 so looks like we're not going to get a record tonight - still hoping though! :drunk:

Something cooking off the NW of Scotland, run the images back to 1900 then forward. Then tell me that's not something. Probably just a splodge though....not some bizarre sub-polar low/polar low.... :drunk:

That swirl could well be the start of this forming:

Looks nice and polar low like :cold:

not here :cold:

but i'm not worried!!

the showers in the forth will do fine for a bit and from the weekend onwards the charts get very interesting

the met office seem to be predicting a polar low from then on

UK Outlook for Saturday 14 Feb 2009 to Monday 23 Feb 2009:

The outlook for this period is for the fairly cold weather to continue. There will be more in the way of dry and fine weather around than we have seen lately, with some hard night time frosts, but also some reasonable spells of sunshine by day. Wintry showers are also likely however, particularly in northern and eastern areas of the country, though nowhere is immune. This means there is a risk of sleet and snow almost anywhere. Later in the period, there are indications that the weather may turn more unsettled, but remain cold. This indicates that the probability of snowfall will increase, and again all areas are at risk, but northern and eastern areas are perhaps the most prone.

So, is this thing forming quite exciting then or is it just something that we will think "oh well" about?

Very interesting watching what is occuring to the NW of NW Scotland, a polar low does look like it is forming whether it can develop fully into a potent beast so to speak or not well we shall just have to see- however, its interesting how the METO have had there eyes on this feature and put out a weather advisory for Strathclyde yesterday for heavy snow tomorrow, but seems very odd how the risk hasn't extended into dumfries and galloway, they much think the low will loose all its energy once it makes landfall and that precipitation will readily die out - however, there is serious potential for upgrades with this feature, and its track is by no means certain these features often make last minute changes in path.. there looks to be a trough embedded in the low which will anchor SE over dumfries and galloway and eventually into Cumbria and Northumberland I don't buy the BEEB's radar forecast of the snow going firectly west this doesn't make sense it is being pulled on a NW flow, so it has to head south and east.

Wednesday expect a potent trough to flow in the unstable northerly giving general cover to many parts. All eyes are on this winter storm in the south, but at present the real wintry weather i.e. extreme cold is in Scotland... -18 degrees is very cold indeed hardly got any mention..

Looking excellent for the PL to deepen as well atm, we have 500hPa temps of -35 to -40 which is perfect, coupled with the steep temp gradients and lapse rates we could see some good baroclinic zoning develop, enhancing the precip a fair bit. Just a case of keeping watch basically.

Certainly had a mention in here but with England and Wales, particularly Southern England, preoccupied with their own snow it's not had a mention anywhere else as far as I can tell.

Due to the unpredictable nature of this type of system perhaps that is why the MO haven't issued other warnings and are just being cautious? Let's hope so anyway as if things pan out right then there could be a real dumping :D
