It's chaos out there. In a village called Fivehead near where I live, snowmelt coupled with heavy, persistant rainfall has caused a deep flood and and no less than 4 cars are stranded in the rapidly rising waters. There is no river nearby, the surface run off of melted snow and torrential rainfall is simply causing a river of water to run down the fields onto the road. People were clambering onto the car bonnets trying to get to safety, the flood was simply rising too fast! When I left, emergency services were helping people to safety and by this time waters were rising over the car bonnets. I have never seen a flood of that proportion in that location before, it was a very strange sight indeed.

As for my local river, it's already bursting it's banks and the Somerset levels are quickly going under. I think I may be cut off by floodwater for a few days going on at this rate.

And still, the rain is pouring.

Yes and that 33mm has been added to by snow melt. We had 25cm of level snow here on Saturday morning (and more than that on the Mendips) and about half of that has gone equating to another 10mm plus. Considering the ground is saturated / frozen in places the flooding will be severe in the morning.

Currently 8.5 degrees after a high of 9.8C this evening, we have not seen double figures since December 23rd. The rain started at around 0530 and and pretty much died out now but todays rainfall total is a quite staggering 53mm which easily beats my previous record of 38.1mm!

We should end up with around 55mm for the day which gives us a total of 219mm in the last 24 days, and the previous 24 days yielded just 10mm!

Matt

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
