Interesting, with just 5 weeks to the equinox, I would suggest we are now entering the period of betwixt and between. The sun has some more power and on a good day is able to heat up the ground more effectively and the spring is, by stages, migrating from the south to the north. At the same time the temperatures in the arctic and the oceans surrounding will be getting to just about their lowest ebb, so we end up in a situation of heat v cold battles.

So, what we get is very much a question of the original source of the airflow. North from the Artctic we can continue to get snowfalls, sometimes quite heavy because with a higher ground temperature and a lower upper air temperature we can generate unstable gradients.

From the South we can get lovely balmy springlike weather starting to get up to the 15 to 16C and where this would mean a cloudy airflow in the depth of winter, though the extra warming effect of the sun is getting to the stage where it can start to burn off some of those clouds at times.

As for the rest of the winter, I would suggest that we are still likely to get some more snow, probably for the next 8 weeks or so. We normally get some northerly blasts in March, April and May sometimes. At the same time we are not likely to have the same intensity of cold which we had in January and earlier this month. So it is unlikely that we will have too many days with a max below 0C and any snow which does fall will be relatively short lived.

At the same time there are still reasonably large patches of snow in the higher reaches of Hertforshire still in existence. What is nice about this at the moment is that it is melting in dry conditions with sunshine.

Personally this is the time of year when I start to get impatient for spring to start and bring some pleasantly warm days, whilst the more maverick side of me would still love to see a howling blizzad with temperatures of -5c, well just for another 4 to 5 weeks.

Jenkyll or is it Hyde?

Exactly the lines I've been thinking along too. The ever increasing power of the sun is starting to be felt now despite it still being generally cold - in much the same way that it feels noticably weaker by late August yet temps remain high. After 3 months where the sun has essentially been nothing more than a blinding tool it's fantastic for it to start to do a proper job of heating things again - and it getting out of eye level too!

'Winter' weather doesn't really leave us until around the equinox save for a few fleeting warm feeling days when you're stood directly in sunlight. It's only really into April when things really start to change (for the better imo!) with rapid heating & lengthening of days. What I do look for in April is a northerly - the kinds where warm sunshine is replaced suddenly by towering clouds which drop snow, hail & very heavy rain briefly before back to sunshine again. What I don't look for is anything from the east which by then isn't very cold and does nothing but spill featureless cloud in & keep temps down.

Back to now... a pleasent day with hazy sunshine. Temps now 2.7c after a low of -0.7c.

Down to -5 last night. A bit of radiation and snow cover help, as the station on top the hill was only -0.9.

14th consecutive air frost, highest min -0.9. Mean min -3.2, mean max 2.5 currently.

I think there is something wrong here. At 07.15 my station reported at overnight minimum of -4.6C and at 10.27 the temperature had soared to 6.3C. There seems to have been a trend, over the last few days since I have set the station up, that it is reporting maximum temps between 10-12. Looks like I'll be moving it again.

A cool, cloudy and calm day today, no frost this morning and no sunshine either. Not exactly very exciting weather - very much the weather to get stuff done inside. The temperature has peaked at 6.4C this afternoon after a low of 2.9C last night.

High and medium level cloud was already well advanced from the west by 0900 and the process of increasing and thickening cloud continued, shutting out any sunshine after 1030. Exceptional warmth for western Europe as October begins

There'll be exceptionally warm temperatures for the time of year affecting much of western Europe during the coming days, but that warmth will only graze the UK for now. Next weekend may see a more direct hit with the potential for southerly winds to draw some of that heat north and take temperatures into the mid or high-twenties. Read the full update here

Unusually warm September ending with some warm sunshine but also some rain

September will end up as another unusually warm month, and there will be some further warm, sunny spells to come as it draws to a close. Another bout of rain will be moving up from the southwest on Saturday, though. Read the full update here
