Canadian Ice Edge Question

    hi ,was looking at the OPC charts this morning for the wintery low thats approaching,and was struck by the ice edge shown on the wave and wind chart for the north atlantic,now i visit opc everyday to view the charts and i cant remeber seeing it that far south or is this a normal thing that happens every year ,be interested in any opinions please

    ice forecasts for the east Newfoundland and Labrador waters issued by Environment Canada at 10:00 a.M. EST Saturday 28 February 2009 for today tonight and Sunday. The next scheduled forecasts will be issued at 10:00 a.M. Sunday.

    Ice edge estimated from Newfoundland near 4750n 5245w to 4815n 4750w to 5240n 5150w to 5450n 5240w to 5645n 5750w to 6000n 5910w to 6200n 5710w then northeastward. Sea ice west of the ice edge.

    Strait of Belle Isle. 9 tenths of first-year ice.

    Belle Isle Bank. 7 tenths of Grey-white ice including 3 tenths of first-year ice except bergy water east of the ice edge.

    South Labrador coast - southern half. 9 tenths of first-year ice.

    South Labrador coast - northern half. 9 tenths of first-year ice except 8 tenths of Grey-white ice including 3 tenths of first-year ice in the northeast Section.

    Lake Melville. Consolidated first-year ice.

    Mid Labrador coast. 9 tenths of first-year ice.

    South Labrador Sea. Bergy water except 3 tenths of first-year ice west of the ice edge.

    North Labrador coast. Forecasts are unavailable until further request.

    East Labrador Sea. Bergy water.

    South Coast southwestern Grand Banks southeastern Grand Banks tail of the Grand Banks flemish southeast Labrador Sea. Ice free.

    East Coast northern Grand Banks. Open water except 5 tenths of Grey-white ice including 2 tenths of first-year ice north of the ice edge.

    Northeast coast. 9 tenths of first-year ice.

    Funk Island Bank. Bergy water except 7 tenths of Grey-white ice including 3 tenths of first-year ice west of the ice edge.

    Contact Ecareg Canada via marine radio for routing advice. East Coast ice analysis charts can be copied on cfh Halifax at 2222 UTC and 0001 UTC and on vco Sydney at 1142 UTC and 2331 UTC.

    • Exceptional warmth for western Europe as October begins

      There'll be exceptionally warm temperatures for the time of year affecting much of western Europe during the coming days, but that warmth will only graze the UK for now. Next weekend may see a more direct hit with the potential for southerly winds to draw some of that heat north and take temperatures into the mid or high-twenties. Read the full update here
