March 2009 Report.

An unsettled start to the month with Atlantic driven conditions, quite windy at times, especially on the 9th with a SSW gust of 42mph. The temperatures were close to or a little below average as the nights were often clear and chilly.

The period form the 11th to the 22nd saw settled conditions with high pressure in control, nights were chilly here with ground frost and fog, the days were at times mild and sunny, but Stratocumulus cloud was stubborn to clear on a number of days which resulted in low maximums.

By the 23rd the high had retreated southwestward and allowed low pressure from the Atlantic to make inroads in to the UK. The weather turned very unsettled and windy here with gusts exceeding 40mph on 23rd, 25th and 26th, rainfall amounts however were only small. Pressure begin to rise towards the end of the month giving a settled and rather warm end.

Summary:

A dry month with only 31.3mm of rain, the driest March locally since 2003 (20.3mm) Windy at times for this area with gusts exceeding 40mph on 4 days of the month. There were also quite a few mild and sunny days noted with the high maximum for the month being 15.9c on the 31st. Cloud cover at 09:00hrs averaged at 58%. The mean temperature of 6.6c was slightly above average for this area. (6.3c)

Daily notes:

Quite a few sunny days were noted here, but one day, the 29th stands out amongst the others. The atmosphere had been left clear and clean from a northerly air stream on the previous day. After a frosty start, wall to wall sunshine ensued shining from a crystal clear and deep blue sky, the temperature only peaked near 10c, but with just a very light wind it was a beautiful spring day indeed, and a rare day in these modern polluted times.

An anticyclonic month for the most part except from 3rd to the 9th and from 25th to the 28th and even then the pressure only fell for a brief time down to[ 982mbs] on the 4th. Some hail ,sleet and snow at the start of the month in the form of showers but the pressure rose to 1036mbs on the 17th. Not a very interesting month for stats and indeed came out to be above average temperature wise and below average rainfall again.

Highest temp 15.8c Sunday 22nd

Lowest temp minus2.9c on the 6th

Highest wind gust 35mph southwesterly on the 3rd

Recorded Rainfall 44.9mms [average rainfall 57mms]

MARCH 2009 STATS AND SUMMARY, LAMPETER, CEREDIGION

Summary

Average temperatures, with mild days overall, and chilly nights- indeed there were more frosts than in February (11 air frosts against 10, and 14 ground frosts against 13). March 2009 was also a dry and sunny month, so a pleasant and unassuming start to Spring. The coldest weather occurred during the first week with some sharp frosts, but there was an absence of really cold or warm conditions this month. The 15th to 22nd was an exceptionally sunny week, having mild to warm days and frosty nights-just beautiful! However the month could have seemed boring to some, what with no marked extremes of temperature, no heavy rainfall or storms, and very little snowfall!

The warmest March since 1999 and the driest since I began recording rainfall. Rather than having any real warmth it was just almost homogeneously above average. The high max of 15.4C was the 6th lowest in the last 20 years. Likewise, the high min of 7.4C was the lowest since 1996. On the other end of the spectrum however, the low minima of -0.1C was the mildest since 1994.

The month could be seperated into three parts, with unsettled periods either side of an anticyclonic middle spell. The majority of the rainfall fell from the 23rd - 28th, though this was mostly in shower form. The last 10 days also saw some quite strong winds, stronger in fact than what was experienced during much of the winter. As expected in such a mild March, snowfall was at a premium. It fell only briefly during a heavier wintry shower on the 8th. The same day a vigorous cold front passed over, introducing a drop in temperature of 2.2°C in 10 minutes.
