Love them or loathe them, plans to build the world's largest offshore wind farm off the Kent coast are to go ahead, it was announced today.

The project will supply enough power for around 750,000 homes - a quarter of all those in Greater London - and displace the emission of 1.9 million tonnes of CO2 every year. 'The partners are satisfied that the project is now financially viable and are now keen to push ahead with construction and to produce the first renewable power in 2012,' the firms said in a statement.

The assessment depends on how efficient they are. I generally like the idea of large-scale offshore windfarms though, as there is invariably a lot of wind out at sea, and they tend not to be much of an eyesore (if at all).

I tell you what...people will be screaming for nuclear and coal powered stations come 10 years!!!! They are ugly, inefficient and utterly the wrong direction. Technology is the way forward not these 'tripod trilogy' monsters.

I agree- and they're certainly going to be far less of an eyesore than if they'd been put (say) in the middle of the Lake District.

Well we have examples of all types. Nuclear power and set to be at least 2 more maybe 3 additional new sites, we also have windmills along the whole northern edge of the lakes and the north west coast, we also have the huge sea monsters too which are likely to be increased to 200 in number. And all of these are within 50miles of the centre of the lakes. What ever the solution it all seems to be built here anyway!

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
