Sounds good hope you enjoy it. :) Not much chance of my cloud clearing i don't think.

thanks. The detail is incredible looks very alien-like :)

An amazing display so far tonight - if I didn't know they were NLC's I'd be seriously freaked out! Look like craters from the moon all over the northwestern sky! :) B)

Wow sounds impressive

Just found that you can make them out on these cams from Germany for anyone who's clouded out like me http://www.iap-kborn.de/Overview.313.0.html?&L=1

Edit: Wow great pics!

tiniest tiniest fast moving gap in the clouds here and I think I could just make them out and the sky looked brighter than usual too.. B) and now a blustery rain shower is moving in!

The crater-type overhead ones are fast fading, leaving the standard wavy ones to the northwest (sorry I don't know the technical names! B) )

Grr. Cloud here.

However you can tell there's something going on as there's a bright white/ blue light through the clouds. If only they'd break.

Wonderful pics from you lucky people.

One from tonight. Wow lightning shots (See Storms/Convection thread P17) AND NLCs in the space of less than three hours? Gosh! I feel lucky tonight. :)

One pic but not as good or as vivid as the ones I took two nights ago. Had to be quick as cloud is fast moving in from the south.

Phil.

Hi guys

Just wanted to pick some brains.

I happened to be awake at about half three this a.m. (don't ask!), and, on the offchance, looked out the window.

It was fairly cloudy, but there was a whole load of blue-ish light to the north west that I could see in the clear slots behind 'ordinary' clouds.

Was this NLC? If so, it was incredibly bright, even through the cloud cover!

thanks

I imagine it was simply dawn breaking. I noticed the other night after a late night in the office that the sky started brightening noticeably from the north-west round to the north-east (where you'd expect it to at this time of year).

OON may have been correct that it was just the dawn breaking but NLC's were observed before dawn this morning*. If they were as bright as last night then yes, they may have been NLC's

* Photo from NLC observers forum taken in Holland before dawn this morning.

OON... surely it didn't take you all night to clear up the cat litter?

Well, there's a first. I may have been right? There's normally no doubt. If they were NLCs at that time of the morning, then they'd have been over the north-east I'd have thought.

When your nozzle is the size of mine, it takes a long time for the suction to work its magic.

this display really is something - not particularly bright yet, but overhead nonetheless! Never seen it cover so much of the sky before :)

Yes it was a stunning sky last night :D . Quite distracting to be driving Northwards at about 22.30  and it was quite eerie with low, scuddy fractal, cumulus racing across beneath the NLCs.

Heads up!

There seems to be a hint of NLC in the NNW region of the sky tonight. The structure is quite fine and very faint although the elevation is reasonable up to about 30deg. Going to stay up another hour or so to see if anything better develops.

Nice shots Frog, I guessed there was a display going on as the few breaks in the cloud were far brighter than normal here. Unfortunately not enough breaks to get a clear view though.

Wow nice pics there frogesque!

All the way down here they could only be seen quite low in the sky tonight.. I decided to try a different spot than from my home with a better view although there was a bit of light pollution.

Love the atmospheric shots Storm! I've gotten too lazy to take the car out at that time of night - must try harder

Kar: was very lucky to get a clear view myself as we'd had a thunderstorm pass over only an hour before and it's tipping down again this morning

A lovely display of noctilucent clouds from Edinburgh last night, the same ones as seen in the lovely shots from frogesque and StormMad26. I drove up the nearby Blackford Hill to get some shots across the city. The added bonus is that the dark clouds on the horizon are the cumulonimbus anvils from the early evening thunderstorm here, but no lightning visible while I was up taking photos mad.gif Enjoy the pictures!
