    on the face of it july 1816 dosnt look that cold..a fair few 70f plus readings in there and even one above 80f...maybe im reading it wrong..would have expected lower daytime readings??

    I was thinking the same- compared to July 1988 which didn't top 72F in London it seems positively hot!

    July 1816 appears to be one of those months where the low monthly mean is achieved as a result of being consistently 'rather cool' or 'cool' rather than anything exceptionally cold. In the same way that April this year was a warm month without ever being hot; consistently moderately above average.
