Appleby Carnival 2009

Today is the one day of the year when organisers from Notting Hill, Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans come flocking to Appleby to see how a carnival is really done.

This year there were just slightly less than 12 floats inhabited by the prettiest ladies Appleby has to offer. Spectators were warned of this though, and there was no reported damage to eyesight.

There were two highlights for me. The first was at last understanding why the leader of Brownies told me my daughter was a pig the other night (she's the one on the left), and the second was seeing an HGV get stuck in a space where it was obvious an HGV would get stuck. What I don't know about long things getting stuck in tight spaces isn't worth knowing.

Did the locals build the pyramid in the background of the third shot? Should have levelled the ground a bit more first, it's on the Tut

Its scaffolding over Appleby Castle for restoration or maybe a new temple to Oon.

The ladies love it when I shoot straight into their faces.

We all know which of those it's going to be.

Mistrust of motor vehicles; they mustn't be touched by hand.

Hopefully when the castle is open to the public again it will be a great attraction for Appleby.

That explains why they're all hurrying in the opposite direction. You can't fool me, that stick's a desperate measure to get that car out of the way, poor woman's in fear for her children's life.

It's not a castle.. It's the local cardboard box recycling centre... They just made it look like a castle to get two lots of grants..
