Yep, I like it when the averages are in the first post of the thread, with some mention of what happened in previous years.

Your wish is my command (though not in the first post, I'm afraid)......

1961-1990 Mean 15.8 C

1971-2000 Mean 16.2 C

10-year Running Mean (1990-2008) 16.6(3) C

5-year Running Mean (2004-2008) 16.3(0) C

Augusts in the 2000s started very warm, but have got noticeably cooler since mid-decade: 2000-2004 every one was above 16.5, while 2005-2008 every one was below.

Ossie

P.S. Easiest place to find the 30-year means is here http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley/centralengav_temperat.htm

....and on my usual basis of trying to find an unused slot that isn't silly (not many left, a very even spread this month), I'm going for

16.5oC

P.S. You'll find all the data on the means where I've just posted it - at the bottom, unhelpfully, of the previous page

Apart from this "hot" spell (well a couple of days) which may occur towards the end of next week, I think it will be rather on the cooler side with this current trend of sun and showers/rain continuing for most of August, and by then the days will be shorter and getting sustained heat might become more difficult. I'd say around 16.1c

How often is August warmer than July?

I imagine it not that uncommon but surely the longer nights in August make it slightly unusual.

17.2C - After a short warm/hot spell in the first week, the rest of the month to be dominated by high pressure as the jet moves north.

I can`t see much hope of any prolonged warmth the way the Jet has positioned itself this Summer.

I will stay around the average 16.4C in August for me please.

Before I forget, 17.1C.

I think we will have another fairly unsettled month but the first half- especially second week- should see temperatures push above average, in particular there's a good chance of the second week being hot and thundery. So the temperature should come out above average, but far from outstandingly so.
