Morakot is really a raining typhoon, some places had reached to 2500mm.

That's about 100 times more than what most people would call a really wet day in this country! I'd like to see a NW style radar acum. precip. for that area!

Morakot is currently in the Taiwan straight, very near to making the second landfall on the Chinese coast. Morakot has shown signs of a little recovery after Taiwan zapped a lot of energy from the system; banding features have become more distinct and convection has increased over the LLC in the last 6hrs. In fact, Morakot looks like it's getting it's act together as a real organised system for the first time in it's life, but it is obviously too little too late. Further flooding is likely in both Taiwan and China over the next couple days.

Typhoon Morakot hit China this morning as a tropical storm, lashing the mainland with very heavy rain. Yesterday, Morakot hit Taiwan, dumping up to 80 inches of rain on the island over a 2-day period, according to news reports. The world 2-day rainfall record is 98.42", set at Reunion Island on March 15 - 17, 1952, so the Typhoon Morakot 2-day totals are some of the highest ever measured in the world. The highest 1-day rainfall total ever recorded on Taiwan occurred Saturday at Weiliao Mountain in Pingtung County, which recorded 1.403 meters (4.6 feet or 55 inches) or rain. Nine the ten highest one-day rainfall amounts in Taiwanese history were reached on Saturday, according to the Central Weather Bureau. Three are dead and 31 people missing on the island, and Morakot also killed 23 people in the Philippines."

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- Authorities in eastern China evacuated almost a million people from two coastal provinces Sunday, as the country braced itself for Typhoon Morakot, which is expected to make landfall soon.

The storm is expected to make landfall later in the afternoon or evening in southeastern Fujian province or Zhejiang province, China's Xinhua news agency said.

As a precaution, authorities evacuated more than 953,000 people, the news agency said. Officials also called 35,440 ships back to port and closed several highways.

In Fujian province, about 8.4 million text messages had been sent to citizens warning them to prepare for the typhoon, Xinhua reported.

The typhoon is expected to weaken to a tropical storm before hitting the Chinese mainland, according to Xinhua.

The storm killed 10 people and injured 18 others in the Philippines, a spokeswoman for the National Disaster Coordinating Council told CNN.

In Taiwan the storm killed two people, injured 15 and cut off power to about 650,000 households, according to Hong Kong's Metro Radio.

Trading at the Taiwan Stock Exchange was postponed until Monday, the news agency reported.

The situation here in Taiwan at the moment is quite dire. As you already know, there has been almost record breaking rain in the southern part of Taiwan, which has triggered some immense landslides: one in particular today has wiped out a whole village of 1,313 people, but so far only 43 people are accounted for.

Several buildings have also fallen into rivers where the water has undecut the banks, and many many bridges have collapsed, making rescue attempts difficult or next to impossible. Most of the south has been cut off.

The worrying thing is that there is a real chance that this episode will not be over before the next typhoon arrives, especially if it is anything like last year. The latest ECMWF model run spins something up in about 8 days so I'm sure it won't be long. We'll see.

You really can't imagine the amount of rainfall. It has to be seen to be believed - it makes the UK look like the Gobi.

Agreed Cookie. We always said that Morakot looked very dangerous, and unfortunately we were right. Here's hoping the next storms a "fish".

A massive landslide in eastern China has toppled six or seven apartment buildings, burying an unknown number of residents, state media has reported.The official Xinhua News Agency said Tuesday the landslide in Pengxi, a town in Zhejiang province, was triggered by heavy rains carried by the storm Morakot.

The Chinese landslide destroyed the four-story apartment buildings at the foot of a mountain at 10:30pm local time (3:30pm BST), Xinhua said.

It is not immediately known how many people were buried under the rubble.

Rescuers pulled six people out alive, but one was in a critical condition.

Morakot, formerly a typhoon, has left six people dead and three others missing in China after landing on Sunday.
