Summary: Dry, near normal temperatures, quiet

It was the driest September locally since at least 2003, with all but 4mm falling in the first 8 days. Temperatures were very average, as with August, with little variation afforded, the maxima ranging from 16c at the lowest to 21c highest!

1st -8th: Unsettled and rather windy with rain or showers at times and sunny intervals. Most of the rain (22mm) fell on the 2nd. Rather cool apart from the 7th which was warm at 21c.

On the 9th high pressure returned to our shores after virtually a Summer- long absence! Pressure reached its highest level since May, and was some 16mbar higher than on the previous day.

The 9th -13th was mostly sunny and quite warm, but with clear, cool nights- the 10th seeing the season's first ground frost.

14th - 21st saw more cloud but was still pleasant with sunny spells, and temperatures average to quite warm, although still some cool nights and a couple of further ground frosts.

22nd/ 23rd was rather different as weak troughs brought drizzle or light showers at times, but sunny intervals as well.

24th-29th: Rather cloudy, a few sunny intervals and near normal temperatures.

30th: A little rain and drizzle cleared to sunny weather.

Cleadon statistics and anomalies relative to estimated 1971-2000 averages:

    Mean Max 17.8 (+1.4)

    Mean Min 10.9 (+1.3)

    Mean Temp 14.3 (+1.3)

    Highest max: 24.5 (8th)

    Lowest min: 6.8 (18th)

    Total precipitation: 28mm (50%)

    Wettest day: 14mm (4th)

There were no days with gales, sleet/snow, fog or thunder.

Overall this was a dry and fairly sunny month in Cleadon. The first week was cool, mostly dull and wet, and it was particularly wet and windy on the 3rd and 4th. There was a warm but cloudy day on the 8th with 24.5C (meanwhile it was 27C and blazing sunshine down in Norwich). The periods 9th-12th and 17th-20th were generally sunny and warm by day and cool by night, but low cloud featured a fair bit between the 13th and 16th. Dry weather and variable cloud featured in the last third and there were some notably warm nights at times- 15.1C minimum overnight 28th/29th.

Temperatures came out above the long-term average yet again, and we have to go back to 1994 for the last significantly colder-than-average September (though 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2001 were very close to the average). It was the warmest September since the record-breaking 2006. Rainfall was below normal but slightly higher than September 2007 (26mm).

    SEPTEMBER 2009 in YATTON, Bristol

September was another dry and predominantly benign month rather like August after a brief very unsettled first few days. It was drier than August and also a fairly sunny month, especially when easterly winds prevailed bringing dry and clear air. A noticeable pattern established itself after the 12th of a few days of sunshine followed by a few days of cloud and only two rogue days brough rain in the form of drizzle or occasional light stuff on the 22nd and 23rd.

The most interesting part of the month was the opening with convection at its best on the 1st with plenty of heavy showers and a fairly deep low pressure system bringing the heavy rain and strong winds since July 30th. The 3rd was brighter with scattered heavy showers and a windy day on the 4th was mainly sunny. It became very humid and warm by the 6th and the highest temperature was recorded on the 8th. The 9th saw the return to cooler air and the rest of the month was quiet and rather boring but at least sunny rather than cloudy.
