As forecast, some milder weather has swept in across the Alps, and much of the early snow has thawed away. There are signs of colder weather pushing back in towards the end of the GFS runs, and I will update his as we move closer to the time.

Morning all,

Fantastic morning. Thats the view over Katschberg looking south towards the Hohe Tauren National Park with Gloss Glockner peak in the far background. General snow level now risen to 2500m. Fohn conditions affected the region over the weekend with the 0c isotherm well over 3000m. Its hard to believe just 9 days agao that snow cover was down to 100OM across much of the Austrian and Bavarian Alps. Berchtesgarten on the border recorded -25C!

Some snowfall appears to have returned to the Alps down to medium level resorts with snow down to around 1500m quite generally, lower in places.

The first Alpine forecast of the season is due out on Friday and please give your comments.

Morning Jackone,

Snowing moderately this morning. That shot is looking towards the Lungau region at 1600m (new gondala station)

from that side over towards Katschberg Mountain. Snowing down to 800m at present. Seems like a early cold block so far, which bodes well for the start of the season.

Snowfall continued non stop for 12 hours. Freezing level around 1000m. Looking good for the weekend with forecast of more snow at times. Will see the first cross country skiers venture up from the valley tomorrow. Soon be time for log fires and Muhr lager. Perfect!

hi the very latest shots are of the slopes above the village at 1750m with a good base now forming and the other is of the slopes above St Mararethan on the other side of the mountain at 1050m. Give a good indication of the present snow level.

I have been watching that web cam over the past few weeks and it is lovely to see the grass disappear under all that snow. Please keep these photos and local reports coming Carinthian.

The first Ski Forecast is out for the season, and a chance of some heavy snow for higher resorts are possible this weekend.

http://forum.netweather.tv/topic/57440-alps-forecast-1/

Some Resort Specific Forecast

Val D Isere - Snow of around 20cm to resort level, temps below freezing by day.

Niederau - A mix of Rain and snow at resort level, with temps around 2-3c by day, 15cm of snow at top station.

Im delighted to see the alpine forum back again

Ill post my regular moans and groans and setups for where im going AVORIAZ

Ill be biased towards there though but Ill keep it more broad and no where near on the level of detail that JACKONE goes for.

The season outlook im going for colder but perhaps (in line with the UK CFS) drier....

Hi John thanks for the comments there already has been some snow at Avoriaz this winter, as you can see by looking at their webcam at www.avoriaz.com

However there does appear to be some milder weather spreading across much of the Alps over forthcoming days.

Hurray! Nice to hear its snowing already in the Alps. I've not decided where we're going this year but probably 3 valleys for a week and one or possibly two other weeks in other resorts depending on funds. Hope its a good season :help:

Using http://www.snow-forecast.com/ , these are likely snow amounts over the next couple of days at designated resorts. This is likely to give a much needed base for many resorts ahead of next weekend.

France

Val d'Isere (Base 1850m) 18-23cm all snow, but front moving through very quickly

Meribel 15cm at 1450m, a little rain to start, 27cm at 2950m

Switzerland

Wengen 24cm at 1275m with Rain at start, 45cm at 2230m

Austria

Niederau - Wildschonau 9cm at 1010m starting off as rain, 19cm at 1600m

Katschberghohe rain at 1060m, 19cm at 2200m

Italy

Sestriere (Base 1350m) 18-24cm snow to all levels

Cervinia (Base 1500m) 35-50m snow to all levels

Sauze d'Oulx (Base 1350m) 18-29cm snow to all levels

No snow appears to have reached the Austria resorts yet, but the colder air is forecast to push in later.

Hi ,the snow duly arrived this morning. Rain below 1000m and snowline 1200m. About 20 cm in my part of the village overlooking the Sonnalm slope. Yesterday the Klagenfurt Weather Office said the snowline will be 1200m. The picture of the St Mararethen ski- slopes clearly shows the snowline, the bottom of the lift is around 1000m. Go up another 1000m and the fresh snow fallen today measures 40cm. Not cold enough though as the snow is wet and not good for a compact base.

Good to see the snow pushing further east, hopefully this will form a base at the higher slopes for the rest of the winter.

Morning, piste bashers out all night working hard to form that all important base. They hope to open runs this Saturday. Forecast of snow tomorrow and sunshine at weekend, however the temperatures will not be low enough for the snow to compact on the lower slopes. Anyway, a better situation than last week. Higher resorts should be open for this weekend.
