So with the last 10 months of above average CET what will December prove?

November is at a remarkable +2.3c currently so will December remind us of what a below average CET feels like?

Could we see some early signs of winter?

What will your guesstimate be? :)

So here are some stats:

The highest CET on record for December is 8.1C (thanks Mr. Data!)

The 1971-2000 average is 5.1c

So I'm going to have the first go :)

4.9c

:

The highest CET on record for December is 8.8C

It is actually 8.1C set in 1934 and equaled in 1974

Oddly, there has never been a December with a CET of 5.9, which is only 0.8C above the 1971-2000 average.

I'm going for 5.9C

If you're going to start a thread this early could you please post some useful statistics to go with it? Or let Mr Data start it so he can add some useful and interesting (accurate) information.

what was last years?

Last years December was 3.5c. 1.6c below normal.

Warmest ever 1974 and 1934 at 8.1c (1974 was warmer in come areas but cooler in others)

December 1974 was warmer than October and November of that year (8.1c compared to 7.8c (Oct) and 6.8c (Nov) at Falmouth the temperature exceeded 10c 21 times and at Wick, in 1934 the average was close to that of a typical May.

December is interesting this century in that it's the only month that hasn't warmed (compared to the 71-000 average and has actually cooled)

2000-2008 4.9c (coldest 2008 3.5c and 3.6c 2001) (Warmest 2006 6.5c and 5.8c 2000)

1990-1999 4.6c (coldest 1995 2.3c and 2.9c 1996) (Warmest 1994 6.4c and 5.8c 1997)

1980-1989 5.2c (coldest 1981 0.3c and 4.4c 1982) (Warmest 1988 7.5c and 6.3c 1985)

1970-1979 5.3c (coldest 1976 2.0c and 3.9c 1978) (Warmest 1974 8.1c and 6.6c 1971)

having said that it's no surprise the 71-000 average was 0.5c warmer then 61-1990 in the run of mild Decembers of the 70s and 80s. 1960s was a very cold Decade for December averaging just 3.5c.

I reckon 5.7°C. It should turn colder later in the month, but I predict a few weeks of mild weather first.

5.2ºC

Chilly start with a north westerly flow - Atlantic again for a couple of weeks - then high pressure and inversions in the run up to Xmas with a quiet holiday period. Pretty standard weather for the 2000s.
