New Technologies For Forecasting Convective Weather?

I remember a television programme I watched some time ago, earlier this year I think that discussed some possible new ways of forecasting convective weather. One of the methods involves using radar to track the movements of large swarms of small insects over the UK during the summer to help find clear areas of rising air, that particular method seems fairly sensible and could well have a lot of use for forecasting in the hours before convective weather occurs.

Anyway, I am interested to hear anyones thoughts or knowledge on the near future of convective forecasting, whether on the idea I briefly mentioned or any others.

I might add that any links to more detailed explanations with regard to this topic would also be hugely appreciated.

edit: link to a presentation relevant to this for those interested.

Another question on this, what is the future of the UK with regards to doppler radar?
