Went out to Birling Gap this afternoon just as the peak gusts were recorded. Down here at the eastern end of town, at home, the max gust at that time was 62 mph but up on the exposed headland in direct line of the Channel winds I estimate I got the full force of between 70 and 75 mph!!!

Several other people braved the weather although the car was bouncing up and down alarmingly. Miss Shoreline got out for about 5 minutes but she was hanging on for dear life to the railing in an effort to keep upright. One guy was knocked straight over and his camera was smashed to bits. At one point I was contemplating tying myself to the railing with my belt to stop being blown over, but after trying to keep the camera from shaking in the incredible sustained wind and manic gusts, I wimped it and got back in the car as it was starting to get mental up there!

Did manage to get a few photos, but the wind isn't really apparent in these:

Back down along the seafront it had calmed down to about 50 mph and the windsurfers decided to take advantage of nature:

I was hoping to go down to Newhaven myself today Martin but didn't manage it  looked to be a very high tide, I take it there was nothing big smashing into the lighthouse today? normally you can guarentee a few big waves if the winds are southwesterly or southerly.

Had another little storm this afternoon, couple of flashes and grumbles.

Hi all, I ended up down at Newhaven today (yesterday lol 14th) for some photo's & video. Was bonkers down on the coast & after 2 hours in the wind i felt totally battered & beaten up. I'll add photo's tomorrow once i've resized them but there was some pretty impressive "swell" going on with waves breaking over the sea defense & streaming upwards of over 100 feet to clear the lighthouse with ease. I also shot some HD video of the conditions down there & it can be viewed

hope you enjoy

Regards

Pete.

Pete that's awesome! I love Newhaven when it's like that, if the weather is set to be winding during the week I think I shall have to take a trip down and try and get some shots.

If I remember rightly the light house is about 70 feet in height, so that will give people some idea of how big the waves are as they crash over.

Had a cracking storm here yesterday at about 11:00am, was at bowls and after about an hour here huge rumble and everyone was like is that thunder, About a minute later i was just about to look outside and there was a huge flash and loud rumble of thunder. Another minute after that it started to rain very very heavy and then the hail started and it was horizontal then a huge bolt of lightning to my west not far away and another loud rumble of thunder. Went back inside for only a matter of 2 minutes because the hail made everyone look outside as it was that heavy and right above an enormus flash of lightning and an instant explosion of thunder, We all shut the door after that as it was dangerous.

Also another feature was the Wind it was very very powerful must of been getting to 80mph, I went back out side about 5 minutes later because it had calmed down though thunder was still going off pretty loud. My mate joined me out in the car park to see it and we saw about another 4 flashes and 4 rumbles.

After that we went back inside and carried on with our bowls and that was most exciting event ive seen since february snow it was very fun and awsome to watch.

I'll pop my thunder reports in here, in the right place! Rumble of thunder in Croydon, Surrey, around 3 o'clock on Fri 13th Nov.

More thunder between 7.45 and 8.45 a.m on Sat 14th, including one tremendous flash and an instantaneous crash of thunder, perhaps the closest this year.

A rumble of thunder just after 6.00 a.m this morning.

A lot of energy in the atmosphere at the moment. I've noticed the ppn associated with this thunder has really intensified over the English Channel, perhaps due to anomalously high SSTs there.

Regards,

Tom.

I also heard a few rumbles of thunder in amongst the heavy rain around 6am this morning - I had hoped it would have progressed into a massive storm, but alas, it wasnt so!

Woken up by long low rumble of thunder at 4am this morning. This was followed shortly after by a single bolt of lightning and instant thunder, then very heavy rain. Suspect the lightning may have struck metal contractors containers or scaffolding in the village hall across the road as very very close.

That'll probably be the one we had here in Carmarthenshire at about 8pm then. Had two more in the night, 3 flashes and rumbles at 1.40am and then 2 more at 5.40am accompanied by some noisy hail!
