Beaufort Scale For Western Isles

I made a beaufort scale for the Western Isles and any other area's used to the wind. The scale is based on my own experiences mainly from the January 2005 storm when our local airport station picked up gusts of 130-140mph.

BFT Scale For Western Isles

0mph very calm. Smoke rises verticall. Very rarely experienced.

3mph calm. Direction of wind shown by smoke drift, but not by wind vanes. Rarely experienced.

7mph very light breeze. Wind felt on face, ordinary vanes moved by wind.

12mph light breeze. Wind extends light flag. Any trees or bushes sway slightly.

18mph Gentle Breeze. Raises dust and loose paper. Small branches are moved.

24mph Moderate Breeze. Small trees in leaf begin to sway.

31mph Fresh Breeze. Large branches in motion, whistling heard in telegraph wires.

38mph Strong Breeze. Whole trees in motion. Inconvenience felt when walking against the wind.

46mph Near Gale. Trees or bushes will sway more. Twigs may break off.

54mph Gale. Small branches may fall off trees.

63mph Severe Gale. Branches more likely to fall off trees.

72mph Storm. Weak trees are likely to be uprooted. Small cars and buses, lorries are likely to shake.

83mph Violent Storm. Weak trees more likely to be uprooted. Branches will break off. All cars shake.

92mph. Hurricane. Some slates may slide down into the gutter or land in the garden. Windows shake. Cars shake.

Some boats may brake loose.

108mph. Some car windows smash. Shed roofs are likely to cave in or come off. Caravans will be completely destroyed.

Most boats are very likely to break off. Sheep have been known to fly at this wind speed and hit cars. Impossible

to walk in.

120mph. Cars parked on grass are likely to slide about. Caravans have been known to fly away at this wind speed.

Sheds or weak old buildings are likely to see some damage to their roofs.

140mph. Windows with weak frames are very likely to smash. Damage to most roofs. Boats are very likely to sink.

Conservatories have been known to have completely fly away. Vans, buses or lorries will flip over.

Thing is, the Beaufort Scale is supposed to be referring to mean speeds. You may have had gusts of 130 mph a few years back, but mean speeds of 130 mph are quite something else.

Wasn't meant to be taken serious. :unsure: Just to show what happens when the wind whether its gusts or mean speeds can do at certain speeds.
