Good to see the regional snow watch back, just in time for us to complain about the lack of weather warnings issued by the met!

A quick assessment of the snow potential:

Thursday: cold building in from the southeast combined with heavy showers coming in off the north sea brings snow showers, particularly in southeastern Scotland by night

prectypeuktopo.png

Friday: Maxima around freezing in many areas as snow showers begin to die out, but by nightfall a band of snow moves into the far north of Scotland

prectypeuktopo.png

Saturday: this day has the potential for the most widespread snowfall in quite a few years, as the front stall over us, bringing very heavy snowfall throughout the day in all parts

Saturday would be very rare as temperatures are going to be no higher than 2C all day, so all of the precipitation would definitely be falling as snow.

Imagine, we can finally look forward to Christmas with the prospect of snow. The past few years I have been insanely jealous just looking at a Christmas card. This is truly memorable model watching at the moment and I am savouring every run!

As the precipitation charts can't be trusted yet this far out... I shall ask my question again since I don't see a reply....

In what time frame can we expect the precipitation on the models to sure up ?

In a frontal situation ppn charts become reasonably reliable say 18-24 hours out.

For showers - it's always a guess. You can be in the middle of the area progged 3 hours before to get showers and they all bypass you - hence their notoriety.

Think more in terms of general trends and themes rather than thinking "in 1hr 47mins we are forecast to get 2.1mm of rain" - because that is unforecastable.

It was mentioned in one of the 10million model threads this week that precip can't be trusted until less than 24 hours before the day, and even then it's a case of watch the radar and the nearest lamp post :cc_confused:

I am sure the snow will come but will it last until Christmas? Only had one proper white xmas in 2004 and five or six days can make a difference........but having said that I do hope this potential fall will give us a proper covering and not just a dusting. :cc_confused:

Really badly lol - unless the conditions are perfect.

City centre/Leith needs uppers (the temps on the 850hpa charts) to be lower than -7 to be certain of snow in my experience. In the set up shown for Thurs/Friday the wind needs to be coming from the north east, too much of an easterly direction and it brings the warmth off the sea. Ideally we would want it to have gone over Fife first.

Obviously out of town and up a bit, e.g. Dalkeith, Penicuik, Bathgate etc. do very well indeed.

To be honest gg I've not sat down and looked through the charts enough to come to a conclusion. I'll probably take time out come tomorrow evening to have a proper look and will post a summary in here then. But that will be after my weekly game of badminton :yahoo:
