It's very frustrating seeing that line of heavy snow about 20 miles north , here it's cold and sunny, hopefully some showers may develop , but i doubt it

Some cold nights on the way in our area this week you'd think with the snow on the ground and gradually clearing sky's. Hopefully some -teens about, odds on you'd say for places like Warcop.

You mean Great Asby surely?!

Still snowing here gently, adding about another centimeter and probably giving us about 5 or 6cm. Not much, but utterly beautiful.

Warcop Range doesn't really record that notable min, its about 75m/200ft above the main Eden Valley.

Great Asby got down to below -10 the other night.

I think lowest temp recorded in England in the 00's is -16.0C at Resedale Camp in March 2001. Highland Scotland got in to -20C's.

The end of winter 2000/01 probably produced the most notable winter spell of the decade with the snowstorm across S Scotland.

The snowman we made at 8 o clock, now has another few cm of snow on top of it, still snowing heavily here. I think this caught the council out up here. Gritters are only just on the roads, and its the first time ever i have seen a snow plough out ploughing the roads round here.

Non-event?! Sorry, but I despair. When was the last time you had lying snow for several days prior to Christmas?

I was a non-event because it wasn't snow. It was hail. If fell as hailstone here, yet 5 miles inland they got 3 inches of snow.

Good point! Besides, the bbc24 forecast mentioned wintry showers for a large part of the region, this evening and again tomorrow. The gfs also shows that!

Did that include areas that are currently missing out (ie, Wigan, manchester, merseyside, cheshire) or is it still from preston northwards?(i'm at work so i can't get the forecast)

Looking at the Beeb forcast, meto and the radr i think south of preston wont see much shower activity. Of course i could and probably will be wrong but thats the way its looking to me.

Could we get lake effect snow of the irish sea?

I suspect the south of the region will largely miss out.

I think SW Cheshire has done poor out of this because the Cheshire Gap effect never happened.

Isn't that what is happening now? Streamers from the Irish Sea pummeling the Ribble and Fylde area. I think the wind direction has changed subtly again and the showers are moving away from the Preston area.

Hi everyone,

Hope you have enjoyed the cold spell so far.

Had complete snow cover since Thursday evening in Summerseat. Here is a summary if anyone interested/ wants to compare with their location:

- Thursday, 3-4cm from the tail end of the North sea streamer on Thursday night. Powdery snow blowing about in NE wind

- Friday, ice day with clear blue skies.

- Saturday, slow recovery from min of -5c, snow showers ahead of cold front coming down from the North. Brief drizzly spell, but cold air hung on in sheltered valley giving rapid change to huge flakes of wet snow on the "back edge", topping the cover up to 6cm despite temporary thaw.

- Sunday, another -5c min. Snow showers in morning, main bands to N and S initially frustrating, but 2 hours of intense snow around midday, with thundersnow, left 15cm cover and a mainly dry afternoon. The band moved back up over here in the evening with another crack of thunder and hail. Despair as it turned to torrential sleet depleting the cover, before turning back to snow with two more eiree lightning flashes through the thick snow.

- Monday, quiet and cold, min -2c, streamer pushed north by SW winds. Cover about 10cm after brief thaw and compaction of the powdery cover.

I've enjoyed reading the reports from around the region and sympathise with the coastal folk who have largely missed out.

Not sure if we are going to get anymore showers, does not seem likely in the short term with too much southerly in the flow, except for the more northern parts.

Anyone any ideas for the rest of Christmas week?

Cheers

Antony
