A day that started so promising ends in disappointment, sure we have 3cm of lying snow, but we had one heavy shower that lasted 40 mins. Also how the hell has Skipton managed to have another 5cm, this on a NW wind. Oh well, I suppose I should be grateful that there are no mild sectors waiting in the wings! :winky:

The 24hr Precip totals on the NW RADAR are quite intresting, showing the entire area of Manchester being covered by high Snowfall totals, with the Foothills of the Pennines seeing the worst of the Snowfall (rain-shadow type of setup going on over a 24h period.)

Its one image to save for the books.

I suppose we might be lucky and the center of the low as it pushes down towards northern irelandthat big fat bank of cloud will be pushed further south and we might end up under it but wether its snow or rain?

A boring day weatherwise, there's just something about cold rain, sleet and hail that makes for a bad atmosphere. In my own opinion (and of course people in the east of the region will really disagree with me here), but the 'cold' spell has overstayed it's welcome, and is becoming a nuisance more than anything around these parts.

Bring back Atlantic storms with some more comfortable mild air.

I'll probably feel that way, when I'm stuck in traffic trying to get to work tomorrow, but at the moment, with everywhere white, and Christmas light's/decorations glowing from people's windows, it all looks very festive and leave's you under no doubt about the time of year we are in. Can't remember scene's like this a week before Christmas. Normally any snow we get, starts from the New Year.

However I can imagine just getting sleety/cold rain can put you in a totally different frame of mind

Yep, got it here again now. I'll be paying close attention to the band of showers just merging together in North West Scotland, because if they maintain their strength and carry on their current trajectory, well.... let's just say the decision to on wether to try and get to work tomorrow could be an easy one to make come Monday morning.

Well if that's the best way we can get snow then i might as well give up. We have not even got a covering here, its been rain showers since 2.30ish. I know other people have snow but we have always had snow from this set up before, why not this time.

Cant imagine milder Atlantic air having a windchill of -5C whilst rain that may be about +1C is hitting you.. :)

Still I'm pleased that many members managed to see a good fall, I just wish the combination of cold wind and precipitation wasn't so severe.

Still tonight I imagine it'll freeze over again!

Seriously, this weather is taking the pee AGAIN. Went out at 2.30pm to an inch of snow. Went to yorkshire to 6 inches of snow and heavy snow falling, came back, it had rained, slush on the ground!

ARE FURTHER SNOW SHOWERS THIS EVENING LIKELY TO GIVE AN ACCUMULATION HERE BY MORNING?

Has anyone else near me been dissapointed with todays pathetic heavy grauple showers with sun in between melting what stuck?

Superb dump of snow up the Dark Peak, it's a proper winter wonderland. Traffic conditions on the A628 earlier were awful and the best idea we had was to come down from the Snake Pass summit as soon as we got there (with great difficulty), just before the 2h of near continuous snow early afternoon...shut now.

It's great what you can see when you go that little bit extra...

Same here mate, same here. 5pm with darkness fallen and it's coming down as RAIN. Even around midday we were getting snow showers despite the fact that the morning's cover was thawing.

It's like some sort of inexplicable Sod's Law which exists solely to starve us of snow. Christmas Eve could give us a battleground event yet I don't even feel optimistic, because I've become so disillusioned. I guess the fact that it's the Christmas run-in makes it particularly hard to take.

it is interesting how varied the weather has been across the northwest, we always lump a very mixed area together but the differences are massive.
