I do remember the met office putting out a severe weather warning for us and heavy snow though from that chanel low...... acute.gif

Ah yes, but the models always said no.

That said, they gave one for ice here and I had 2cm of snow, so I guess its swings and roundabouts :winky:

I can see where your coming from but the likes of me and your self almost have mountain height to help us along in some of the situations although even I did not get much snow tho very cold.

Thank you Pete! Great to hear such a story!

Problem is Pete, im no expert but people in the model thread kept relating to 63' when talking about this cold spell.

If you go in the modle output thread, you will find its started again with regards for the Fantasy Island charts for new year!

Happy Christmas Pete.

Well, if it is like '63 you'll never forget it. The worst thing I remember about it was the cold which was relentless. Here I go again.... I forgot to mention the freezing rain. Every time mild air tried to come up from the SW the rain froze onto everything, the trees, cars, telegraph wires, and with a strong SE wind you could here continual crackling as all the ice creaked and groaned.

I've NEVER seen freezing rain like that, since.

Happy Christmas to you too and keep your snow dreams alive!

Pete

True, and there wasn't any lower down to speak of. I'll admit that, but then it takes something pretty special to produce snow down lower... its not called the English Riviera for nothing :D

That said, routine -6 to -9C is pretty rare in December I'd of thought? I can't remember many nights that cold in the last 10 years?

wow, all that rain is starting to freeze, Quickly.

My wall in my garden must have 1/2cm of ice covered on it!

Maybe if more comes tonight it might turn to snow. either wait its looking deadly!

Not as cold as that this early no but i have seen alot more snow than this in december in last 12 years in fact i can go as far to say that i have seen a white xmas three times in the last 12 years and one delivered far more snow than this cold spell. blush.gif

All in all not a bad start to winter as long as that is not all we see this winter because then i would rate it down with many of the others as pants. doh.gif

ppn is turning back to sleet in south west???

I've just got back from a walk over Leckhampton Hill. A winter wonderland up there!

The rain turned sleety as I approached Hartley Lane on the way up, and at the quarry there was snow; already a cm or so up lying from before. Walking over the top there was heavy wet snow, which progressively turned less wet. An inch or so lying but certainly very pretty and in stark contrast to down in Cheltenham. On the way back, the snow line had lowered quite considerably and there was heavy wet snow as low as Daisybank Road. On the higher parts of Leckhampton Road the snow was settling fast. Snow was pretty heavy and I couldn't believe how quickly it turned to rain once I got just inside the town. Snow level was then about 120m. I think Cheltenham's lack of snow today can be attributed to:

-marginality

-heat island effect finishing off any snow

-lack of existing snow cover to keep temps lower.

I think that said I've had 5 white Christmases since moving to Dartmoor 1998 (although was in Pompey for 3 years)

2006/07 and 2007/08 were appalling winters here with virtually no snow.

very heavy snow around Stroud

just on BBC local.

Tetbury without power and some people being rescued from Stroud area

It looks fairly bad around that area, should get a good covering out of it.

Interesting evening! Since 4 o'clock seen it all here in Stroud - rain brief heavy snow heavy sleet. Just been out (bearing in mind I'm near town centre) and there's a layer of slush on all pavements, and remaining ice and snow still from this week. My friends driveway froze in the 10 minutes I was there. The 5 min radar is hinting at some heavy showers coming this way still - rain or snow who knows, but either has potential to cause real problems away from major roads. Classic early 80's as I remember, although I was only 4 in 1980. (He says realising he ain't 25 no more..)

Good pinch of salt required here I think! But I'm glad there are still some of us left!

Hopefully i can find out what will happen if any more showers head up here.

there still seems potential.. But very slim

I think it turned to sleet on higher ground over Dartmoor & Exmoor then turned back to rain as it heads towards me.

Wow, what an eventful day weatherwise, never had anything like it before! we've had pretty much every type of weather here today in East Dorset with about 4 or 5 great Thunderstorms with Hail, gusty winds etc. There was even some wet snow mixed into the rain this morning. Starting to feel a bit warmer though!

A lot of people keep harping back to the Feb event - I think Reading copt that this time yesterday. A front coming up from the south west and hitting the cold air.

I would love another Feb event but with much colder temps during the day to stop the slow thaw and slushy horrid stuff.
