6Z trickling out, looks better for next week, maybe more snowy troughs from the N, still as clear as a bell here, bbc and gfs suggest snow flurries later, temp now -3.8C

You can't slate the mega cold spell! You will immediately be accused of "throwing your toys out of the pram", simply for being realistic. They don't like that in there :whistling:

The thing is though, in terms of average temperatures, it is expected to get either cold, or at points, very cold.

This is also true compared to recent winters, and in terms of projected longevity, this is quite an unusual cold spell.

But like the snow, if you expect the big freeze of yesteryear, then it might not seem that cold. But as the week goes on, temps could fall more rapidly than expected. Some very low mins as well forecast. OK, some of the lowest in Scotland, but potentially (not sure of the probability) or close to record breaking mins, at least for the last 10-30 years.

If we look back at winters of 'noughties', then we really are in a position of something we haven't experienced (in terms of not just the current spell, but the spell in Decemeber) for quite some time.

00z seems very interesting, with the cold spell still continuing to past the 10th of this month, looking compared to yesterday, an extension of a further couple of days.

Snow for our region, in main, is likely to come from troughs - so patience for these projections is required. Fronts may also make an appearance, but patience is required again.

BTW - I may ask for this thread to be renamed "The Grumpy Old Midlanders Thread" :whistling:

yeah does show a few, can see cloud to my extreme NW, although even if snow showers come, will be washed away by tomorrows rain

Post from nicksussex in the model thread suggesting that due to the slack airflow we could be seeing temps as low as -15c, now THAT is cold!

There's two snow showers coming through the Cheshire Gap which are going to get tantilisingly close to here though i think they will slide down west.

Tommorow evening looks interesting??

Happy New Year folks.

Going to be touch and go to get an ice day here now, -1.6c, rising about 0.3c every 15 mins and will probably continue doing so for another 90 minutes or so. We need some cloud cover!

Got down to -4.5c last night, so not too bad.

Don't be silly mate , there is no way that under these conditions that tomorrow's trough will be rain. Remember this time it is coming from the North not the South.

Got down to -1.9C last night and it's now -0.5C. Could be an ice day here too but I reckon it'll go just over. Very small diurnal variation we're getting at the moment!

Happy New Year All :D

A new year and no change, the two snow showers are deciding to slide the heavy stuff about 2 miles east and about 4 miles west of here....

Hopefully this wind direction will generate some more snow showers in the Cheshire Gap though, we deserve a streamer.

Woke up to a nice dusting this morning. The temps dropped to -2C and its currently 0C.

Anyone seen the Met O warning for Peterborough on Tues!

They are predicting 20cm of snowfall. Considering we're only friday, to be warning about this amount of snow this early is incredible. Infact i've never seen this before!
