Regarding 10123 post,

The current trough/disturbance has a slightly warmer sector embedded, 850's are favorable along with thickness, just the dews become marginal. I don't expect the warmer sector to push in with the showers, looking at the radar on NW extra over the past 2 hours, it shows the precipitation as sleet/rain Just NE of Scarborough/Whitby area in the N sea.

Later tonight, things will become marginal with precipitation for a time for eastern coastal counties, with some places further inland possibly becoming marginal for a time as the warmer sector pushes across the region, as the flow is changing, it's the LP to the NE that's sinking causing it.

Precipitation is expected to die back to extreme coastal areas around 9-10pm tonight, although i wouldn't rule out the North Yorkshire Moors and the Scarborough area seeing more in the way of showers.

All depends on the current 12z output on the GFS, but the warmer sector within the LP is becoming smaller on each run.

Also due to the resolution on the standard GFS charts, it can make a huge difference in terms of localized warming, down the road could have a dew of -1 or -2, and 1 mile down the road could have a dew of 0c to +1. I'll keep an eye on developments on the 12z, although i think the 18z later tonight will confirm whats happening.

I'll also keep checking the NMM models at a better resolution, and of course the timing of any shower activity associated with the low pressure.

Lewis

It will lose some of it's intensity in the next hour or two, current projections show anywhere west of here (Scunny) may possibly be in the firing line unless it carries on it's rotation and moves a more southerly/s/easterly direction.

To be honest, I can't see it fizzling out as it's pretty intense

Well this week has been really poor. On numerous occasions I have geared myself up for some good snowfall, the usual stuff glancing outside the window far too often, peeking through the curtains and watching the lamp-posts and its been crap compared to what was forecasted.

It seems that whenever it rains - it rains for hours and hours in organised bands and the radar is awash with activity. Whenever it snows it comes in pitiful so called 'heavy showers' that last (at best) half an hour and give a meager covering and we look for the next so called 'heavy shower' and monitor the radar for the illusive red and grey blobs on the map with a magnifying glass that are that tiny someone a mile away could miss out.

Are we gonna see proper organised snow this winter?

Like take a look at the radar at the moment, everyone has been making a fuss over that band that has gradually filtered south from the NE - that when/if it arrives will probably deliver nothing more than 1-5cms.

If it was rainfall the entire map of Scotland would have one huge purple blob on it, but if its snow its a NOT organised and 9/10 nothing more than scattered showers.:drinks::rolleyes::drinks:

You're joking

Have you seen these that I took about ten minutes ago? it's still snowing now, so the pics don't give a true representation of the current situation.

Plenty of NO here today. At least the frost stuck around all day which is the only white stuff around away from the moors.

Very disappointing. Just caught the edge of that shower with 10 mins of moderate snow, even though rain today didn't show anything over us. It's all gone west, as they say!

Yep, shame but the snow from the feature that crossed the N Sea and came ashore in Northumbria is not developing on its eastern flank so we are going to remain dry for a few hours yet although it is already below freezing here (-0.2°C) with a DP of -2.7°C. Pity as anything falling with these temps would definately be snow.

Let's see what happens once this little low is to the SW of us and the NE flow re-establishes....

So I am looking at the RainToday? radar atm - it shows a semi-organised band East of Scotland heading directly South. Is this expected to keep on heading directly South or will it suddenly at the last minute change and go West or East?
